Fishing the Fluke

Could someone shed some light on how to fish one of these? I see it talked about in here often but have never used one.. Thank you in advance

I am not really good at fishing them. Pretty sure there are some guys on here that are...Rick Mcferrin is one for sure. Look back through some of his threads.

In creeks, I skip it across the surface until something gives chase then stop/let fall.

On lakes, I jerk it back a couple feet under the suface where I can still see it then pause letting it fall until I can't see it any more then start jerking it back into sight. Watch your line on the fall it most of the time get hit then.

There are a ton of ways to fish them.
My favorite is putting a split shot 8-10 inches up and bouncing it off/across the bottom.
Also weightless and twitching it like an injured shad. With this method i like to use a pearl white and color it with a red marker.

i fish it like Travis C. fishes it, but i fish it a few different ways as well.

I use belly weighted hooks with keepers to get the bait down a bit more
I use two on a Yum double up rig sometimes.
I put one on a scrounger jig and just reel it in.
I put one on a fish head spin and reel it in.
I use one for a spinnerbait trailer.

I am actually a big fan of the swimmin super fluke. I fish it, or the reaction innovations skinny dipper more than the split tail fluke.
I fish it in all of the same ways above.

Either weightless, rigged seedless on a 3/0-4/0 hook. Jerk back fast VERY erratic, breaking the surface from time to time. Smallies love this!

On a 1/4 oz jighead, reel back jigging, swimming, twitching.

I fish the flukes weightless the majority of the time as well. I let the fish tell me what kind of retrieve they want. Sometime they want it jerked fast like Mike said, other times they want it BARELY moved, twitched slightly while resting on the bottom. Rather than use a weight or jig, I just vary the size hook I used to change the rate of fall. But I'll have to try some of the other mentioned methods though.

What type of locations have you guys have had best luck with the fluke? For me, its been on flats where I see alot of shad flickering on the surface. What colors work best for you? The only colors I've had success with is Pearl white or Pearl white with the tail dipped in chart. dye.

The only way you can fish it wrong if its its not rigged completely straight on the hook or jig......

I like to fish it on a 3/8th oz jig in deeper water or on a 2/0 offset bass worm hook with @ 12" leader with a swivel in shallower water....my favorite way is the "Dance and Drop" method (no weight) when the water gets over 60*.....cast it out flip the bail closed as it comes to land on the water then rip it across the surface for about 10 ft then work it s l o w l y with an occasional twitch......also in the right situation Ill throw a Fluke on a 1 oz jig....

I forgot that I do have a pack of the small flukes that get used on a drop shot rig. So there are actually three different ways I have fished them.

As far as where, the large flats on OH are good and once the small shad start hiding in the grass or around boat docks will skip it under them or throw it way back in the grass and jump it out.
