Caney 11-23-2012

My son and I went and fished the Caney today. Had planned to start fishing at 7 but due to the rain had to wait until 8:15 to start. The big browns did not want to play today. With only 3 hours of generation there was just not enough water for long enough to arouse them. I did catch 1 brown about 18 inches long. The good thing we found was that since the browns were not going to cooperate we started throwing blue fox #2 gold spinners and caught a bunch of rainbows. They must really be stocking them now as we caught a lot in the 10 to 14 inch range. With all of these rainbows next year should be really good as they will grow some during the winter. I was glad to see some in there since the disease hit the hatchery earlier. Overall it was a good day of fishing with my son.

I went Wednesday in search of the big browns as well. God couldn't have given a nicer day to spend fishing although He could have given a few more trout haha. I did catch one decent brown on a rainbow trout color jerkbait and that was it for the browns. I then played with a small roostertail and caught one rainbow, several hits that I missed and a couple that got away. The brown got foulhooked and I had a hard time getting the hook out otherwise I would have taken a pic of the nice color. I just didn't want to keep that guy out of the water any longer than necessary.

Nothing too exciting, about 15 inches.

Best part of it....a day out with your son. Wish I could have been there....sounds like me and the Trout Magnet could have had a good day.

I think that the water was slow and low enough you could have fished the TM. I wished I had some zig jigs. I am going to have to order some of those. Just got to figure out what color.

Hi, I'm Billy in Murfreesboro, been lurking here for a few weeks.

I was there with my son on Friday morning, fishing the TM. We had no luck, but guys around us seemed to be getting a fish or two on dough baits.

We were throwing various color magnets, letting them float the current a little, jerking a little bit, but no luck at all...

On the upside, I did buy a Jackson Big Tuna on clearance at Caney Fork Outfitters later to make myself feel better!

Looking forward to meeting some of you kayakers out on the water.

Welcome Billy. What pound test line were you using and did you have on a fluorocarbon leader?

Welcome, the fish may have another thing on their minds right now. And those not doing it are only looking for the by product. Which could have been why the dough guy fishing small round looking objects were catching a few.

I'm using the Magnet due in large part to your postings. I bought the kit from Leland's including the 2 or 4lb line and fluorocarbon leader.

We were at Normandy a few days after you and did catch a nice 'bow there.

I'm often fishing with 1-3 of my kids (8/12/16) so the gear is kept as up to spec as I can with that many young fishermen catching treebranches and tangling each other!

Thanks for your informative posts, great stuff. We just need more practice, tips from the experts and good places to go.

I will say that Alpha has a special skill using the magnet. We can be fishing side by side and he will out fish me 2 to 1 using the magnet. He has years of experience fishing the magnet. You cant compare your catches to his. I learned that a long time ago.

As everyone knows any member can give a post a rating ... I delete about 6 or more spammers per day that has got by my watchful eye and post and rate ... All ratings are averaged ... Does anyone know if Caney Fork Outfitters carry large shiners or live bait in general? I usually pickup artificial lures only there.
