Interesting day at the Caney.

My son and I arrived at the Caney about 11:45. We were sitting on a bench and having lunch when a gentleman walked by. He got to almost where my car was and came back and asked "Are you Alphahawk"? I said yes and he introduced himself. His name is Marshall...he is on the forum....very nice gentleman. We talked a while and he had had some success at catching some trout in the morning before the generators started. My son and I were excited to hear he had caught a few nice Bows. We waited about an hour after the generation started and put in our kayaks. This is the first time either of us have ever fished the pond during generation. We did not catch a single trout...LOL. We did however catch about 50 Crappie between the two of us all of them appearing to be in same year class. Nearly all were 12 to 13 inches and thick fish...guessing a little over a pound each. We also caught about 75 Gills between the two of us...most of them in the 7 inch range and very broad shoulders. We did not keep a single fish..LOL. We went hoping to get in on some trout action and had not planned on catching such good Crappie. I also caught a nice Carp....gave me fits on the new line I was trying out....2.9 pound test. It held up well. That fish took quite a while to land....he fought hard. We also observed a man catching a 12 pound Rainbow. Quite a fish.

You never know what will turn up on the Caney. Nice Feesh.

I'd love to seen that rainbow. Will have to check with Joel next time up, he'll probably know all the specifics.

I have a question since you were there on one generator. The water in the pics look somewhat calm. I know where you were and would expect that to be but how much current is it to get there while they are running. Some days I want to try it but since my boat is oar powered do not want to get sucked down stream.

People have always said it was way too rough for a boat without a motor.

Wow! Great outing. Were the crappie on a structure pattern or more associated with depth? Almost looks like your success was more related to oxygenated water than other factors. Geez that could have been a great fish fry but glad you guys caught some fish.

They were kind of relating to structure......reasonably close to the walls. But what was neat you could see a lot of them come up and inhale the Trout Magnet...that was fun to see.

You could do it with oars...no problem as long as the sluice is not on. As for the details of the 12 pound trout...it was 12 pounds...maybe a little over but the scales showed 12 pounds.....here is pic. He asked my son to take some pics of the fish and I also took one.

You could anchor...today it was no problems at all. As you know I fish the Trout Magnet a lot. I have always caught trout in the pond...but that has been with no generation. It is hard to fish a Trout Magnet in heavy water...heavy current. Neither of us took our bigger rigs to throw big trout cranks...that was a mistake I won't make again. That Rainbow is the biggest I have seen caught up there. I have seen that gentleman on the river for about 3 years now...for me anyway. I have seen him catch some huge Browns...and quite a few of them. That may have been what he was fishing for today.....I don't know.....but he knows how to get the big ones.

That is a beautiful rainbow. I have seen a few other big rainbows caught this year. The slot limits seem to be helping put some larger fish in the river.

I imagine the trout magnet can really slay the trout in the pond when there's no generation. It's a good time for nymphs on a flyrod too, and the TM is about as close to nymphing as you can get with a spinning rod.

When the water's up, I prefer to switch to bigger, faster moving baits.

I have heard of at least a half dozen good size bows caught this year 5lbs and up.

I agree on the slot. If we can keep water in it by late summer then they'll continue to grow. One can only imagine what size the fish would be now if the construction wasn't going on and slots were in place.

On an interesting side note.. I seen the new Tennessee Sportsman Mag. They have a summer hotspots for trout in TN article and the Caney wasn't even mentioned. Oh how it has fallen from 2007-08.

Did they wiegh that fish? Not to be negative but it does not look even close to being 12 pounds! But hey I was not there.

I didn't weigh the fish but the man who caught it did. That gentleman is known for taking huge Browns. When I took my photograph he was not holding it even the least bit out in front of him to get a frame of reference. He had brought it over to us for my son to use his camera to take his pic. Trust me...the fish was 12 pounds...maybe a little more. My son...who took the pic for the man has a 10 pound plus Brown Trout to his credit...remarked it was quite a bit bigger than the Brown he caught. It was an impressive Rainbow.

I have seen this gentleman catch several big fish on the Caney. In my opinion he is the best big trout fisherman on the Caney. I have a video I took of him landing a 12lb. brown this spring. He has electronic scales that he weighs his fish with. He is legit.

Here is a pic of a 11 pound bow look how much larger this fish looks to the one you posted. I got this off the internet. But pictures can be deceiving! Great fish anyways! And this guy is holding the fish out away from him.
