Default Thread Fins Shad

anyone have any pointers on catching Thread fins with a cast net? I can catch all the gizzard shad I want, but have a hard time finding the thread fins in the 2-3 inch size. last couple fishing attempts, only fish i could catch were on live bait...couple nice LM and a few nice stripe. Bait didnt sit long and whammo! Also I have read in numerous article to troll live bait as much as 20-100' behind planner board or a bobber. This seems like alot of line out, is that much really needed?
thanks

catching most of fish around Rockland area, when boat and jet ski's are not around, around drop offs.
