It does take some time getting used to it. I like to get comfortable in the craft first by taking it out in protected water and seeing what the limits are, seeing how well it tracks and just what I can do with the boat. When I do this it's usually warmer out. Keep your head in the center of the craft becaus if your head gets off center that's usually where your body is going.
In the Coosa I would recommend starting out in the low position and getting used to the boat first. The high position for a new paddler or someone not familiar with the Coosa seem tippy at first, but once oyu spend some time in the boat you will get more comfortable. I wouldn't worry about standing for a few trips, and would install an assist handle to help getting out of the seat from the high position.
I'm glad you were able to get out and hook up with some gills, and sounds like some nice ones at that. I've been researching some UL outfits, and think I'm going to go with the Shimano Stradic CI4 Microline, but don't know which rod.
