Default Repair Tips for a rod

What's the best way to attach these things? I've got two cheapo Ugly Stick rods that both have a bad tip on the end. Like to keep one in my truck and one in my Jeep. I bought a couple of those fix tips, and a buddy said that melting goop glue doesn't work too good. What's the best way?

The traditional ones use hot melt glue like what goes in a glue gun, the emergency ones have either a heat shrink tube to secure it or screw down on to the tip kind of like wire connectors.

You have to scrape the broken part which will go under the tip making it rough and getting some epoxy off for the glue to hold or it won't very well.
