Because gas stations were also garages and Free air was a means to get people to stop by, maybe needing tire work.
Today, I believe these coin operated compressors are supplied by 3rd parties, so now you have monies split between the business that pays the electricity, store owner and the company that services the compressor.
I remember when it used to be .25 to air up your tires... so this $1.75 is news to me. It's all about profits...
