Default Stones/Cumberland 12-27-16

Got down to the mouth of the Stones about 10am today in search of toothy fishes. Was greated with a barage of stumps, logs, limbs and a trillion leaves littering the water column.
Snapping a spoon i lost a decent feeling fish....could have been a big white as i was marking some fish off a steep mud bank. Lost a few jigs then ran up to the dam. There were a few birds diving but with the generators going and spill gates going it was too rough for me to show any interest. Jigged around the wall and got a few small gills and snagged a small cat in the eye. Marked a good school of fish behind the barge tie-up pillar in the slack water but they didnt want anything i was offering. Fished a few other places on my way back down with no luck.
Last place i tried has produced sporatically in the past so i figured one last ditch effort before i call it a day.
I strung up the biggest shiner in the bucket, tied on dual stingers and dropped the jig down at the head of a 38' hole. A few minutes later i was on my up-jig when i felt weight....figured it was a snag but jerked anyways......that line shot left and up river drag screaming! i knew it wasnt anything i was fishing for but i wasnt gonna complain. About 3 minutes later i seen a flash and some bubbles....up from the deep came a monster cat with the jig and both stingers locked into his rubbery mouth. By now my fore arms are sore from the under sized tackle but i managed to scoop him in the net. My personal biggest cat to date. No giant by no means but my gosh the gut on the thing. Lol.
Video is on gopro but laptop is a P.O.S. so it will be a while before i get some video and a still pic to post.
Not the day i was hoping for with the trash coming down the stones, but it ended up pretty good!
pics and video to follow this week.

Sounds like a long day of fishing with minimal results, like our results when we are fishing together Talking about fighting a fish until your arms are tired. I'm in Illinois with my wife and her family and decided to go fish below a dam to see if I could catch and walleye or striper. Found out that the river is loaded with Asian carp! I was throwing a blade bait and ripping it up off the bottom and every cast I would snag a big carp, 5 minutes later I would get it in and do it all over again. I eventually gave up and moved down river and caught a few spots and some crappie.

Lol!
Thats why i could never be a deep sea fisherman....5 minutes on a fight is about all i want....then im ready to either get it in, or break it off and try again. Lol.
I just couldnt believe the amount of leaves in the water column in the stones. If i got my jig to bottom without a leaf getting stuck it was a miracle.
Water color was O.H. standard, stones wasnt horrible.
They need to start generating longer at Cordell or my place up that way is gonna be a bust this year.
Im gonna have to change gears and do something stupid, like fish for bass or something. LMAO!

Here it is....my whiskered beast from the deep! LOL.
like i said earlier, i know its no giant, but its my biggest to date on the river, just bulldogging on that rod and 6lb. braid too.
FYI, new rod is the Lews from Academy and a Lews Hero reel. the reel was off the rack in a blister package, but the drag is pretty smooth and it reels nice.
still working on the video....wishing i would have tilted the fish toward the camera some to see more than its underside....but im sure you get the jist. Its a catfish. lol

Yeah buddy, that thing was a butterball!
i tossed her back Eddie....after the slow sauger day, i was hoping to run into some more, but no such luck.
Ive heard that winter cats can really school up in the holes around bluffs, i would love to get into a school that size and bigger. With upgraded gear though ofcourse! lol

It was a total of 5 minutes fighting on video so i sped it up to keep it interesting.
Tbanks for the compliment on the hoodie. Its made by Fishbum Outfitters out of Canada. Great grest clothing that lasts and sick designs. Its pricy but its worth it.
