Old Hickory and the Caney

My South Dakota high school buddy is in town to fish and go to the Vikings Titans game. We decided to hit old hickory Friday morning since I'm so close to Lone Branch. Well this will be a short report because we bass fished cedar creek hard and not one fish. Not even much shad activity. I've heard tough reports and it held to be true. We used spinnerbaits cranks and frogs in the grass mostly. We fished from 8-11am.

Then off to the Caney with the way the generation schedule was.. with better luck. I've noticed when the current is more swift the trout are more aggressive so we started with small jerk/crankbaits. We started off with about 10 the first 45 minutes. Then the next hour or so we caught about 5-6 more. I didn't catch one fish on the trout magnet. Everything was caught on a small spoon or cranks. This time we caught mostly Browns which I usually catch rainbows. We had a great time an are headed back in the next few days.

We talked about maybe headed to JPP but the reports haven't been great either. Happy fishing!!

Fished old hickory Thursday with no luck. Fished drakes creek til 9 or so then headed out to river. My son lost one couple pounds on spinnerbait that was chasing shad in a boat house. Only real shad activity we saw. If trout are biting that might be where you want to stay. Lol

I haven't fished anything below Cairo in a while so I'm not tuned in to the mid to lower end but on the upper end all of the bait is in the backs of the creeks. Like all the way back as far as you can go in less than 1 fow. All of these areas are not holding lots of bass but some are. It's kinda hard to compete as there is soo much bait. Hope this helps anyone looking for bait

I should also note that there is plenty of bait in the main river up there as well. It's not all in the backs of the creeks. But I haven't been to the back of one big creek or small feeder creek up there that wasn't full of bait. Water temps have been anywhere between 72-80 in the pockets and creeks and 70-75 in the river

Thanks Texas rig. Was up there 2 weeks ago and stayed out on channel and temp was 75 or less. Lower end Thursday got to 83 by 12 o'clock. Think I will start looking more to back of creeks. I am spinning right now as to weather go up lake or stay down.

Also a side note. I have only been able to find 2 areas like this but if you can find the gizzard shad in very shallow water then you need to fish it pretty hard. The two feeder creeks I have found with the gizzard shad have been by far the best producers for quality. Pretty slow last week but these 2 areas have produced at least on 3-5 lb bass almost every trip. A few trips have produced some nice 12-15 lb bags. The best way I have found to figure out if there is gizzard shad present is to fish as far back as I can and then crank up the big motor. The vibration of the motor will have those gizzard shad acting like Asian carp. They will be jumping out of the water everywhere if they r there
