Default Destin 6/4 - 6/11

Wife and I will be headed to Destin on Saturday. I usually take a charter out once or twice but with this being the first time taking our 14mo son, don't think that's in the cards this year. We stay about 1/4mi from East Pass so will be fishing the jetty, surf, and wading the bay as much as the wife will allow. Really wanted to take my boat or yak but just couldn't make it work out. Babies require too much crap lol. Will try to update this thread as much as I can while I'm down there. If any of you have any helpful info you'd like to pass along, it would be greatly appreciated. I know the area and how to fish it pretty well but can always learn.

Was in Destin May 14 thru the 21st. The first day I caught 2 nice speckled trout at the Coast Guard docks. Didn't do much but catch lady fish after the first day in the bay and caught most everything before or just after daylight. Everything in the bay I caught on a 4" mullet swim bait by Voo Doo lures. Bought them at Half Hitch Tackle (great store if you haven't checked it out). The charter trip and the 6hr party trip were both good. Caught my biggest amberjack an trigger fish this year on the charter.

Thank you for the report, Shoe man. Good looking trout there and I'm sure that AJ was a blast.

Not a bad start to the trip. We had nasty storms all last night and this morning. It broke apart this morning so I went down to fish for a minute while the baby was still sleeping. This guys smoked a Matrix Shad on my 4th cast.

Was able to wade for a few hours this morning along the bay. Only managed one solid trout on topwater. Had another blow up from a good fish right in front of me but couldn't connect. Fished a lot of other stuff but June grass is too bad for anything subsurface. Going try it again tonight or in the morning. Wish I could do some more surf fishing but the waves have been crazy since the tropical storm came through.

Glad you had fun...When I worked in Destin we would watch the guys wade and gig Flounder on the west side of the outlet around the submerged rocks late in the evening. Half Hook can set you up and give you some tips when you go back down if you need any. Seeing the parking lot in the pix you are right on them. Charters are very expensive now and without getting a 36hr on a 50'er with six or eight of your buddys' and going to the ledge the Dolphin eat nearly every fish you hook.

Probably too early for the big reds in the Jetty....so I would try some cut chunks of cigar minnow with a circle hook buried in it around the rocks at the jetty if you get a chance. High tide is best for catching mangrove snapper. Also have caught an occasional grouper. No weight and they can't see the hook or you will not have much luck.

Thanks for the input, guys. We go to Destin every year so I will definitely be able to put this info to good use next year. I didn't catch much else the rest of the trip aside from Ladyfish but missed a bunch more trout on topwater and had a really nice Redfish follow a spook almost to my rod tip. Didn't get to fish nearly as much as I wanted but I can't complain. The baby was kind of a handful so I stayed around a lot to help. He had a great time so it was still a great trip. Thanks again.
