Don't laugh :)
day off.jpg
I'm new to TN. Been visiting the harpeth in Franklin pretty regularly since I got here. I'm trying to figure out what i've been catching. usually it's small blue gill (i'm pretty sure) but sometimes I catch fish that really don't look much different from the blue gill but people keep saying they are bass. Today I think I got some red eye bass ( guessing based on names i've heard people around here say, some small mouths, a drum (no idea..is there another name for a drum?) and then I assume the bottom one is a channel cat.

Welcome to TN and the forum, maxonehiphop. Looks like you have caught every species in the river. Good catch.
Merv or Jimmy can give you good recipes for the drum and carp. Merv also has recipes for shad.

wait...did I catch a carp?
Yesterday was my best day fishing since I moved out here. It was a blast. I hooked so many good size fish that got away, caught at least 20 fish (mostly too small) and then kept the last 5 that I caught...besides the cat. It was the first catch yesterday. I was pretty hype cuz I haven't been able to catch any cats out here. I went back today and only caught about 5...only one keeper (no cats) but I caught my first fish using a lure...never caught a fish on anything other than worms. everyone keeps saying to use rooster tails. I haven't had any luck w/rooster tails so far.

all the fillet's are in one bag. Not 100 percent sure I'll know which one is the drum. What is it about them that makes people either not like them or assume they won't like them?
is there another name for them? I've never heard of them before coming here and I don't recognize them.

When I was younger, we would catch small ones 2lb or less, and would often mix them up in the fish fry. They are tolerable at that size. One fateful day, when I was older we caught a nice 8-9lb one and being the only fish we caught, and set on a fish fry, we decided to keep it. It has been a few years, but I remember it had large yellow fat deposits between the flakes of meat. And the other thing I remember is no one could eat it, and it was unanimous we would never try to eat one again. If it hadn't been so long ago I might be able to recall the finer points as to why, seems like it stunk up the place while frying a little bit too. But I do know, I was completely cured that day of any desire to go there again. I think some people call them Sheepshead.

I do A LOT of creek fishing and if u really want to start slaying them I suggest going and getting one of those brown/green or orange/green crawled lures. I always catch fish with it or real crawdads.. good luck man creek/small river fishing can be amazing

that is so crazy but apparently dead on. I used "slab daddy." They were bright orange or green...can't remember there were 3 in the pack. I got hits almost immediately but lost 2 of the lures during the "fight".
and then lost the 3rd one after I actually landed one. I was stoked. Lures have never worked for me so that was pretty exciting. Plan to go get some more of those as soon as possible.

sounds great. I just need to figure out what a trout magnet is and i'm guessing that you catch more than trout w/a trout magnet since trout don't live in the harpeth
I went today and tried the same lures I used a few days ago...no luck. got several small small mouths on worms and a few small red eyes but nothing big enough to take home. Got some hits that were really exciting. something took my line down and wrapped it around a log and then got off the line. I got a couple glimpses of it....no idea what it was but it was bigger than anything I've seen so far.
