Default OH 8/29/15 stripers

Took one of my good friends, Greg, out for a morning trip to OH. Put in at Hunters Point, netted a few gizzard shad and set up a bottom fishing spread in a likely spot. We took turns on reeling in fish when we would get bit. Greg reeled in the first striper with a nice 21# fish. I followed that up with a 10# drum. Greg caught the next striper, a nice 14# fish. I then hooked the next fish. This one turned out to be the big one that got away. He hit my biggest rod, with the drag locked down pretty tight. He kept going and going, then..hook pulls out. The stripers bellies were on the slim side so I'm thinking they will be feeding heavy on through the fall. The only other notable fish was an ambitious 10" sauger who had the tail end of a 10" gizzard shad down his throat. He fell off as I was pulling him out of the water.

I've never tried bottom fishing for stripers before. I know Joe James does it from time to time.

Guess I'll have to give that a try one of these days.

Gonna have to fish OH more often as the stripers on JPP are rare this year.

Without my trolling motor, I have been just picking spots that have been known to produce before, anchoring and setting up multiple rigs. I also had two shad out on slip bobbers set at 20' which were very active, but they didn't draw any bites this time.
