Last Sunday morning, Capt. Jim Durham and his wife joined me on a fishing trip at Tims Ford. Capt. Jim was interested in the "Spread" trolling technique that I use and I invited him down to experience it first hand. Our total fish count for the morning was 15 and as you will see in the video, we lost a big one.

As you can tell we had a fun morning! Capt. Jim wanted to test his Capt. Jim hair jigs and as you can tell, they worked very well. I ordered a hundred jigs from him after the trip.

This time of year is actually the easiest because of the thermo-cline. They get the fish up where it is easy to get to them. This will just get better as the Summer wears on.

What rods and reels do you use, if you don't mind.

I am looking at some line counting Okuma's on ebay.

The six rods and reels that are used on the sides of the boat are Okuma Covector 20 Series line counter reels. The rods are 7 foot, medium action Ugly Sticks I bought at Walmart a couple of years ago. I like the softer tips because of the 20 pound Power Pro braid. I am very close to switching to 20 pound Big Game mono because I am getting tired of the braid tangles!

I also have some 30 Series Convectors and a couple of the new Okuma Cold Water reels that I use for trolling Urigs. Those reels also have 80 pound braid and are attached to 8 foot rods.

The down rigger rods are 7 foot Ugly Sticks, medium heavy action. The reels on those rods are Shimano Tekota line counter reels. They have 80 pound Power Pro Slick 8 line. The Tekotas are very good reels but pricey.

If you are on a budget, you cannot go wrong with the Okuma Magda Pro line counter reels. I used some of them for over 10 years. Get the 20 Series reels. The line counters are the same as the Convectors.

The Okumas on the Ebay link are 30 Series Magda Pros on 8 1/2 foot rods. They would be Ok for Trolling, but I prefer the 20 Series. Price sounds OK.

For the record . . .

Your rig is also perfect for Lake Michigan/Huron salmon and/or Lake Erie walleyes.

I have a similar rig: Twin cannon electric downriggers, very similar rod/reel combos (med/heavy; 7-8') and line counters.

This is all we ran for salmon. Planer boards or jigging more popular for walleyes. The electric riggers are crucial for deep water due to the "power by armstrong" alternative.

I'm looking forward to running a fast troll with my 'riggers pulling big spreads for pelagics in the gulf this fall. Haven't done that yet . . . WAHOO!!!
