I hear you about new water. I had fished this spot for many years. Only a short thigh deep section to get out to an ankle deep gravel bar. I would not have waded it without already knowing the spot as you couldn't really see the bottom deeper than about 1 and a half feet deep.
Creek fishing is a blast! I really like the 2lb test with 2lb fluorocarbon leader set up for the creek. I am not positive I can catch everything I hook and there are a bunch of tense moments trying to land a typical stream bass. Lots of drag pulling and back reeling. But it adds to the excitement for sure. And so far, few if any have broke off. It almost feels like flyfishing with light tippets for big trout. Totally different than the usual reel them in as fast as possible with the heavier bass tackle.
