I fish these two ways and have been very successful with these methods In this time of the year ...

Smallies ... in the winter especially the Hollow and the Hill ... cast it... it will flutter as it falls ... 50% of the time you will get a strike on the fall ... Now we are talking 20 plus feet of water Let it hit bottom if you are in 20 to 35 feet of water ... ...the retrieve is at a (hard to describe) as a pulse with your rod tip ...you must fill the blade flutter !! drop the rod tip and repeat ... While you are reeling in ... Similar to a floating fly technique ...

Now sauger and eyes ... Same as jigs ... Hit the bottom and then a sudden jerk/yank and let it resettle ...

As far as colors ... I've tried them all... and most fisherman go with the bait they have confidence in ... Since I had the privilege to fish with Billy Westmoreland ... I am biased to use the plain silver Blade bait that He invented ... Make sure you take some plug knockers with you ... You will need them !! ... <'TK><

Lots of good info here, thanks a lot guys! Hopefully my wife or daughter (or better yet, both ) got me a Bass Pro gift card for Christmas and if so, some blade baits will be bought...along with a spinning outfit to replace the one I threw into the water last time I was out

I'm sure anyone who fishes a lot has made donations to the lake/river/sea gods in the form of a rod and reel setup.

Some get cast overboard, some kicked or knocked, I had one slip out of my hands last year because my hands were so dry (cold, winter day) when I set the hook hard into a rockfish, the rod was just yanked right out of my hands.

Surprised? Yep. Pissed off? Really!

Fishing in fast flowing Cumberland river, never had a chance to retrieve it.

So if you are ever jigging around lock 5, maybe you'll catch it.

Don't play dumb. I was talking about you. If you do not see the fish you can't prove it wasn't a snag.

Too true. No photos....it never happened.

Just one more piece of advice. If you are bouncing them in current tie a swivel in line a few feet above to reduce the line twist. Also for the past several years BPS has put them on sell for about 1/2 price during the spring fishing classic (like the pervious advice buy them by the dozens). The smaller ones are great for crappie and the larger one catch everything from all species of bass to sauger and walleyes. I even caught a nice paddlefish below OH dam last winter on one.

Andy, You lucked out the paddle fish catch was a fluke ... more like a snag ... Paddlefish are plankton eaters ... First Cousin to the Sturgeon (locals call them Paddle bill Catfish No such thing) They swell those large gills and absorb everything in their large intake ... I use to commercial fish for them in the early 80's during the Russian Caviar embargo ... great white meat and taste ... Like everything else ... Beware of the red muscle ... <'TK><

I can't blame the lost rod on a fish or snag, only stupidity. It was still a bit early, so cold...my hands were a bit cold and stiff and when I went to make a cast, I forgot to open the bail and with the awkward jerk that followed, the rod just slipped right out of my hands and into the water. I tried snagging it but couldn't find it so if anyone fishes the Clarksville marina and snags a St. Croix rod with a Shimano spinning reel and a Little George lure attached, Merry Christmas!

I don't always lose rods, but when I do, I do it with grace & style .

I'm right there with you Nomad. Have lost a couple of setups I never even made a cast with....LOL.

I have used these in the past for walleye, sauger and stripe and they are very effective using all the methods stated above, but I had to invest in a mold to make them myself because they got to be very expensive, I dont know if they still make the mold but well worth the money if you use alot of them as I did. But they were one of my favorite walleye baits in the winter below dams.

Merv, you know I actually believe it was a big fish. You caught fish with me in the boat and very few can make that claim.

And Sambolie, just to prove to everyone on this forum what a GREAT FISHERMAN I am, I am going to do it a few more times next year!

Anyone can have a fluke day and catch fish with you in the boat (admittedly it's rare) but knowing my extreme ability to find, cajole, and get fish in the boat, I believe I can overcome that dark cloud of "unfishcatchingness" that continually follows you from lake to lake, river to river, pond to pond.

And don't be swayed by gboyce's diatribe about my inability to catch bass. since he ALWAYS make me fish the back of the boat, and he has a very HUGE ego. So when I hook a bass, I gently set the hook so as not to alert him, gently lead the bass behind the motor, dip my rod down into the water and shake the fish off so he doesn't even realize, as he is rapid firing one cast after another and mumbling to himself "I know there has to be at least one bass in this lake", that I have just "professionally released" my third 5 pounder of the day.

Were he to see me hooking into these fish, he would go into such a deep funk, he wouldn't talk to his wife and kids for days and me for WEEKS......but then they might appreciate that!

I'm thinking I'll have to show him next time out!
