When setting up the Float N Fly could you use your float like we do Crappie fishing? Instead of clamping it to the line and have 9-12' hanging out, Could you use a slip float and a float stop? That way you are not casting with 9-12 ' hanging out?

A slip-float is not ideal since the line moves through the float. The fixed float helps with bite detection, especially when smallies hit the fly from above. A clip-on bobber that is weighted neutrally will "fall over", a slip float may not. Also, a slip float allows the fly to rise when you twitch your line, a fixed float keeps the fly at the same depth much better.

Didn't get to go. My power went out at 6 am Sunday and stayed off till after 9 pm, so I had to deal with that. My bro in law went and his only action was two missed fish on tailspinners.

I highly recommending taking a few minutes out of your day to read this article by Mike Bucca on the Float and Fly technique before trying it. It is a very easy technique, but has to be done correctly or else you will be wasting your time.

I have use this for many years and it works the same way. The float is made of balsa wood and with a 1/32 oz jig the float will stay upright but when the fish puts the jig in its mouth it will lay over on its side.............woody

Has anyone used this technique in creeks before? I was reading a blog from a river fisherman in Indiana and it is very successful for him in the winter kayaking and wading.

If you are talking about Matt (psuer) he knows what he talks about it and tells you straight up what works for him and why (no salesman bs).

I rigged up six bobbers like in the video, made up a bunch of 1/16 oz flys, spooled up a reel with nanofil (that stuff casts a country mile, put it on one of my 10' Wally Marshall rods and got a spool of 8# fluorocarbon for leaders. Now I just need to get out there and use this stuff.
