Looking for a new line

I’ve been using Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft line on all my gear now for about 5 years and I have loved it. Since it’s getting harder and harder to find (and I assume it’s not going to get any easier) I’m looking for a new line.

I’ve done a lot of research on braid (even asked questions here), fluorocarbon, and copolymer. I think I would like to stick with a copolymer line as it fits my needs for most applications I fish. I still may experiment with braid on one of my setups. With that… I’ve read and read reviews until I’m sick of reading. I would prefer to get input from folks on this board versus reviews from people online. Here is the short list of lines I’m looking at. If anyone has had experience with one please give me your thoughts. If there is a line not on the list that you would suggest please let me know that as well.

I spool 6lb test on spinning reels and 10lb/12lb test on bait casters.

• Maxima Ultragreen
• McCoy Mean Green
• Silver Thread Excalibur
• Seaguar InvizX (100 % fluorocarbon line looking at experimenting on one of my bait casting setups)

I know there are specific applications and certain water clarity, species of fish you're targeting, lure weight, etc. that some people swear by a specific size, color, and composition for fishing line but I think that makes things more complicated than they need to be. I like braid for its durability but I find it's a huge hassle on a baitcaster reel because of it digging into the spool. I'm about to do away with it completely on my rockfish rig.

I've used BPS and Cabelas brand mono for years and never had issues being able to set the hook or having fish break me off due to abrasion or knots breaking. Sure, it happens on occasion, but I doubt that's because I use that type of line. I also use Stren flourocarbon for leaders. I like to keep my line selection simple and spend keep the more complex decision making applied to lure selection and presentation methods.

I have used P-Line Flouroclear copolymer in 6lb to 25lb for years.
Its all i use other than braid.

I have used both the Maxima and McCoy....but keep in mind only in 2# and 1# test. Both are great lines with the Maxima being a bit pricey. The McCoy....since it is a co-polymer has considerable stretch. But when fishing in mossy conditions for big Gills and shell crackers that stretch in the line allows me to gently pull a fish to me should he get in the moss. I can't do that with the 2# test NanoFil as it has no stretch and will break in that situation. I don't think you will go wrong with either one. I am always testing new line....looking for that Holy Grail of fishing lines....LOL. My conclusion...so far......is there is not one line to suit all fishing situations. It really ticks me off that Shimano long ago quit supplying a spare spool with their spinning reels. I have to change out line at certain times and since it is expensive I put it back onto the spool it came off of....a tedious process.

I'm with you jadt2t...I like to keep it simple. I can't spool a different type of line on each reel or change line depending on the species I am targeting. I would like to try and find an “all around” line that fits my needs (which may be wishful thinking).

blink… pline flouroclear was on my list, but on the tacklewarehouse site it didn’t get a lot of good reviews.

At first I may need to splurge and test with a few different brands then decide from there.

im a fan of the Bass Pro brand of mono myself. its inexpensive, you can buy it in bulk, i think its $8-$9 for over a thousand yards and the stuff is TOUGH! you get snagged if hard to snap your line to re-tie. I think it has great knot stregth too!
My only complaint i guess that i have with it, is it doesnt seem to have a very long reel life. With trilene or another major brand, you can have it on a reel unused for a few weeks, take a cast and its smooth as silk. But the BPS line has memory/coiling issues if its not being used reguarly. Its still strong as nails and smooths back out after its stretched, but that first cast or 2. Other than that, im a huge fan of it.
I personally to date, dont fish any waters that warrant the use/expense of flourocarbon line for its invisible under the water properties. maybe that will change if i fished clearer water though.
Anybody remember when Rapala had thier own line? Man that stuff was awesome, you could wench up the titanic with that stuff!
yeah new line can be a crap shoot for sure!

I use the P-line flouroclear in 10-12 pound on my spinning reels and braid on all my bait casters. 65pound on my whoppin stick, it throws the A-rigs, C-rigs and frogs. I use 30 pound braid on everything else. I don't use leaders either and have never had any issues, I still catch plenty of fish. I will change line size if fishing a clear lake but fishing priest, OH and G ville I usually stick with what I listed. I also change my P line ever month and braid every couple months. I use Power Pro braid.

Ultra Soft compares well with the old Tectan premium line. Not sure about the newer versions of Tectan (superior), but it is worth a shot. Just be sure to compare the lines using similar diameters (rather lb test). Both UltraSoft and Tectan tend to be smaller diameter than other offerings in the same lb test (ie everybody else's line tends to overtest). I believe Fishusa dot com is the only place importing Tectan these days.

Silver Thread AN40 is pretty good and is similar, just slightly larger in diameter (might try dropping down one lb test). Izorline platinium will cast as well, but is super stretchy and likes to kink up, I would avoid. In copoly, I really like Suffix Siege, but it is not like Ultra Soft at all, very stiff. McCoy over test, might try dropping down two sizes. I only use flouro for leaders and like a minimum of 20/6 or 30/8 lb test braid on baitcasters (with and without flouro leader).

PS tackle warehouse carries Ultra Soft, if you can't find it locally.

Does BPS not sell the Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft anymore? That's where I buy mine, but I haven't been there in a few months. Would be a bummer if they stopped. I use this line on all of my spinning tackle.

BPS no longer carries it. I first started buying it from Cabelas. When they stopped, BPS started carrying it. Now tacklewarehouse is the only place I can find it, but they don't have 6 lb test. You can find it at miscellaneous places on the web, but they usually don't carry color/size I'm looking for.

Yes I am afraid so ... P-Line ... The only exception would be is what I used for the trophy Stripers ... I never had a failure with Berkley Big Game 50 pound .... <'TK><
