I've read that smallmouth don't hang around and protect their babies so I guess it's possible it could have been SM. I don't know what fish spawn at cooler temps than bass. I know a couple of weeks ago we had some water temps around 60*. Any suggestions?

I’ve seen this often in very early spring......technically still winter. I have often wondered what fish....if any, could spawn say in mid 50’s...or lower water. I don’t have an answer but the ones I used to see when I would kayak in VFW lake in early to mid March looked like bass to me. There are no shad in that lake.....just cats....bluegill....crappie.....shell cracker....and of course bass.
