About the same as what Travis and Alpha said.
The rotor turns counter clockwise to take line on the spool. The line should come off the spool in a cc fashion also. I would never use a mechanism that let the line come off in a linear fashion as this will definitely twist it. Almost like reeling against the drag.

If you notice twist in the line: Remove hooks, lures, etc and let line out as you troll. The more line you let off the spool the more twists removed. Crank back in and start fishing (after tying on a lure).
