The only times I fish them under a float is when in current or it's windy. The more wind the better but you really need to cast parallel and as close to the water as you can with the 2lb test. A lob cast is no good in a steady wind. Allowing the wind to drift a TM into where the fish are is a killer. If there is a foam line created by the wind or current put the lure right into that and give it all the slack it needs.
I use the pear shaped TM float.
