I believe the scuffing it up is the most important part. If you get it on uneven you can always add more coats. If you don't have good adhesion the entire process is pointless. Take your time with the prep for sure and you'll be much happier with the results in the long run. No experience with rustoleum on aluminum, but the above holds true on bedliners in pickups which also go over existing paint.
