70 vs. 90 hp? Evinrude vs. Yamaha? Any thoughts?
 

Considering upgrading to more power. I currently have a 94 70hp evinrude 2-stroke on a 16 foot deep v smokercraft. I could swap (for little to no money) for a 98 90hp yamaha 2-stroke. Any thoughts on the differences in reliability of these two? I currently get 37-38 MPH top speed on the 70hp. How much more could I expect from the 90hp?

What's max rated HP for the boat? I had a 150 2-stroke yam a couple boats ago. Light boat would go 51mph. I almost NEVER went more than 30. Why run the RPMs up to max and put that much wear on the gear?

Nice to have the HP for efficient running, hole shot/torque, but speed? 90hp is not going to set your hair on fire; but it's a great engine.

One can never have too much money, too much fun, or too much horsepower.

Thanks for the reply! My boat is rated for up to 90hp. I'm thinking about buying an entire boat with the 90hp on it, swapping the 90 for the 70, and re-selling the other boat with the 70 on it, hopefully for what i paid for the entire thing.

I had a 90 Yammie on a Skeeter 17' Aluminum and that motor was bullet proof. Anderson Marine, go there and get set up.

For me I would avoid Anderson Marine at all costs. When I purchased my g3, I paid cash (I am far from rich, just old and have traded/sold up over many years), but I went there twice and no one even said hello to me, and when I did ask for help, it was like I asked him to go to the dentist to help me. When I talked to him asked about different boats, a 1652 vs a 1756, he told me he wouldn't sell me the 1652 and I never could get him to tell me why. I stayed each time over 45 minutes and the first time I even took the cover off a 70 hp 4 stroke and looked the engine over, the second time I just left. The bad part is the exact boat I purchased was in their lot. I believe there is more than reason why they do not sell g3's anymore. Overpriced also. They charged me triple for touch up paint when I purchased it there, I did not realize it at the time, they were the only g3 dealer at that time around Nashville. I also told them they would get no positive comments from me. Horrible customer service.

If you can, I would try to get a 4 stroke, love mine, a yamaha f70.

Thats funny you mentioned the Aluminum Skeeter, Dad had one of those he bought from Rhea's Harbor on Watts Bar about 12 years ago....fast forward to the Nashville Fishing show 2 years ago....a Skeeter salesman, early 20's at the time swore up and down that skeeter has NEVER made anything but fiberglass boats. LOL....so cocky selling those super high end glass boats he had no clue about his companies history and was politely calling me a liar. LMAO. Dad's was a Yamaha too....4-stroke 60 i think...dont remember now but man that thing was whisper quiet!

The used boat market is absolutely on fire right now. Great time to sell, but if you haven't already put the next rig in the driveway, you're fishing from the bank. :D

TN Bronzeback - Skeeter's aluminum bass boat line was actually manufactured by G3 boats. I think I bought mine in 1999 and shortly thereafter G3 began to market aluminum hull bass boats that looked exactly like my Skeeter. When I dropped by Anderson I asked about the similarity and was informed that Skeeter had licensed the G3 boat to sell under the Skeeter name. Around 2001 or so Skeeter stopped selling an aluminum hull bassboat.

Thats interesting. Alll i was basing my comments on to the sales guy was that we owned an aluminum boat with the skeeter name and bug on it, and that it wasnt painted on with sharpie! LOL
Great little boat though!

I loved my Skeeter tin boat but outgrew it. It was a great boat when my kids were young and my oldest son ran over a submerged log on a foggy morning in a local tournament. He called me at work to tell me the bilge pump kept running. When I saw the boat it had a split weld seam on the port chine. Took it to Anderson and they gave me a brand new hull no questions asked.
