Cumberland River Backwater Kayak Fishing

Went out early Saturday morning with Craig and Mike. We squeezed into a narrow creek off the Cumberland that most boats can't get into. It was narrow even for a kayak! Then it opened up and we had lots of nice laydowns to throw into. Post cold front and bluebird sky conditions hurt our fishing but we still got some.

Mike and Craig were catching some quality fish on topwater frogs and poppers. The first fish of the day was by Craig on a topwater frog and I believe he said it was right at 18". I was spending too much time with finesse worms and hooked a 9" bass. I set the hook and pulled the fish out of the water haha.

Finally I went to topwaters and caught two consecutive on a buzzbait. Both in the 14-15" range. Later on I got one on a crankbait a bit over 15". Mike got a really fat 18.5 incher on a crankbait too. I did have a solid 3 pounder grab my crankbait right at my kayak as I was finishing the cast and not even really looking at it. Of course, I didn't land that one. I was surprised to see a big fish do that. I've had small bass do that but usually the bigger ones are smarter!

I caught a huge gar on a crankbait that leaped clear out of the water and spit it back at me, I've never seen that before.

Totals for the day:

Craig - 7
Mike - 4
Me - 4

Great day on the water with some great friends to have. I didn't take any pics since my fish weren't that big. I believe Mike may have some pics of his fattie that he got on the crankbait.

I'd like to bring you out there but I have to keep my word with Craig that I wouldn't tell anyone where it is. If he's ok with me taking you there we'll go!

There are a few more places on the Cumberland that look like just as good of an area and look like they don't get fished often. I'd like to do some exploring in the yaks and find some more water that isn't pressured much. Next time I get out I'll let you know and you're welcome to come explore some backcountry water with me.

This coming weekend I'm only fishing Saturday morning and that's going to be renting a boat on Williamsport with my Father in law. Maybe next weekend. I'll let you know.
