Cordell Hull Dam boat ramp
 

Overall is this a good ramp below the dam. Is it safe also how wide and steep is it. Hopefully it's well maintained?

Well the one I saw on Google Earth if you're headed from below the damn down the river it's on the right. Not familiar with the area that's why asking

That ramp is wide and well maintained. It is not too steep....IMHO. The other ramp is on generator side and is steep and narrow....but still a good ramp.

watch the generating schedule if they run three the current at the ramp can be forceful just come in with the steam on you need when you go on the trailer. Tthe cross traction strips are annoy but the ramp if top notch. Its a walk back up to the vehicle if you forget something.

Thanks very good to know do u fish there a lot? I was thinking of doing some striper fishing below the dam what do you fish for

This is my first summer below the dam. Iv'e put in by the lock 4-5 times and poked around trying some things I used minnows,various things all wrong and I watched others.

Let me tell you if your in your boat alone be aware of how fast you can be moving and who is where. I had a moment when I took my eyes off of where I was and where I was going and when I turned from the bait tank back to the tiller I was face to face with a channel buoy glancing hard almost hit the motor. It would have tore it right off. a break down can be bad news if you dont have one hell of a trolling motor especially if any other boats are around and not watching you. I saw accidents 2 of the times both boat handling like mine when the flow changes. If there are 3 or 4 boats watch them and see if they got something going on and I stayed out of it and played along the flood gates and the Skipjack are a blast along the lock wall.

Its a hard place to fish alone in a boat if you arent ready to manage the boat, rod(s) and bait/bait tank and fishing partner (lol).

I have a 14' Grumman DeepV with wood decking and its a little heavy and it seems to slow down the drift and a 20hp Evinrdude that runs really good but its a 1972 with 158# in both cylinders which is good

I drifted down to the mouth of the caney fork probably 2 generators then it went to one. Center Hill wasnt generating so the mouth. there's fish there. I didnt hang around long. Wanted to see how fishing back upstream might be.

I watched a boat catch very nice stripers 2 generators going after 4 passes. It went like A then B then C then D then do it again and go home. They had it down to a science. A while back I read an article about trolling and I thought "what" so I tried it above the dam last summer using planner boards but I didnt do A and B and C and D I did DDDDDDDD snag. So I watched these guys doing like the article they had it .

It a great place to try different things, There are Asian Carp, Drum, Saugers, all the black bass. BIG bluegills (longears?), Stripers like a minnow so I tied these wiggly minnow and maybe I will try them Wednesday

Wow great info. I fish below old hickory mostly when it comes to dams I lock thru and generally take someone with me. I'm thinking of making some fall winter trips to ch dam. Thanks again!

Hey Tom........I'm thinking of trying it Weds. , your thoughts? We can fish off mine. Not sure yet what we'll look for, but it's supposed to be a nice day.

Its the best day this week it looks like. I can't.

I had a plan to go below the dam this Wednesday and do some drifting with a neighbor, Tuesday looked good on radar but I made an app't with the doc to do some blood work.

Im thinking out loud now. As it stands the week of Nov 10 and the week of Nov 14 nothing going on The first and last week of Nov I have family in for holiday stuff but the middle two weeks nothing.

Look at your calendar Ill look at the lunar calendar and lets mark out what might be best days. Id sure like to pick the walleye side of your brain.

I saw a sign on the lock doors when I was there last and it said the lock is closed to recreational boating or something to that affect I havent called them but just in case anyone plans to lock thru better check. It may have been closed because of the gov shut down or maybe I misunderstood. Ive never lock thru. I read on the ACofE's web site they require 24 hours appt? Phone calls in order.
