A tough day today. Fished 4 bodies of water and managed only 6 Gills. Not much else to say. It was a beautiful day to be on the water.

Ouch. Hope it gets better. My dad is coming to visit next week from CA and I am taking him TN fishing with his grandsons for the first time.

Uh oh. That doesn't bode well for tomorrow, with more high pressure and blue skies. I'm planning on spending a little time early on fishing for bass, and then switching to the ultralight, using TM's and some beetle spins. Sooner or later I'll find them! Right around the time I catch my first striper/rockfish/striped bass :D

If I can't get someone to go with me by December 1st...... May go it alone. I need the fix.....LOL.

Update for today
 

Went back to VFW today and only got one fish....but a decent one. The shell cracker is just over 11 inches. He gave me a heck of a fight on the UL.....only one fish but sure made my day. Going to head back to Pickwick next week.

Nice fish, Alpha. I can't seem to find the gills in the river...today I tried a TM (bison color), 1/16 oz rooster tail and a beetle spin and not a bluegill to be found.

Nice fish Mr Randy!!, how do you like those new tungsten jig heads you got??, I bought some 4 mm tungsten beads at BPS and I was thinking about tying them to some aberdeen hooks I have and maybe try them for Crappie or Gills in deeper water, I tied two on the only hook decent enough to fit them and it feel great on the UL, I have not tried it on the water yet but it sure feels way better than lead, what hook type and size do you think will be the best to do this??

Boy would I like to have 12 of then frying in a pan, look at it this way my good friend as long as you are have fun it doesn't matter how many.................woody

I love fishing with the stuff. You can really feel your jig much better and when a fish breathes on it you can feel it. The drawbacks of it are cost. If you do your own it really cuts cost down. If you can find some 5mm beads those work great in deep water. I would use a #10 hook. I had some 5mm beads that had a #10 hook epoxied into them. They worked great but that company went out of business. I just need to get a vise and do my own if I am going to continue to use them.....but man I sure love using them.

Alph, Post a pic of one of your jig heads if you don't mind. And I'm not sure how youre using the beads. My favorite Gill jig is the TM Chatrose / Orange

Hammy the bronze colored jig has a hole through the center and a steel hook is put through the hole and epoxied in....that jig head is a little more than 1/64. I had these made by the guy that runs Trout Magnet guide service. The tear drop jigs came from eBay and weigh about 1/25. The tied jig head and the other jig head I bought from Sportsman Direct and they are 6mm in size and weigh 1/16 of an ounce. The hook in the silver looking jigs is a fine wire hook that has been soldered into a slot in the jig head. I don't particularly care for those hooks. I am going to try to take those hooks out and solder in some good hooks like in the bronze colored jig head. The cheapest way to use and afford the tungsten is to buy the beads and put a hook through the center of the bead holes and epoxy them in. I will not use them in summer as cost is too much and I don't really need to use them in summer....unless I am after Gills in 30 feet of water. You get an amazing feel with tungsten....but man is it expensive. I hope to get to Pickwick this week and try out my deep water spot for the Gills and use them and hopefully catch a hundred or so.

I have never used a jig that small.

I bet it takes patience for it to drop in deep water.

Fishing micro jigs in deep water does take patience. But by using tungsten with a much higher density than lead they fall quicker and transmit feel far better than lead. I have some 1/8 ounce lead jigs with a #10 hook and when I fish them in 30 feet of water it is very hard to feel the slight hits.....but with a 1/16 ounce tungsten jig head you feel everything. Many have asked why I just don't use a bigger lead jig if I want more weight but it does not fish the same. Now I have to get out tomorrow and find where some Gills are stacked up in the channel.
