Introductions
 

I just wanted to introduce myself.

My name is Stephen. I recently moved to middle TN from Southwest VA. I am an avid fisherman and mostly fish for trout (fly and spin). I am just getting into big river fishing now that the trout streams are few and far between.

I've fished all over WV, VA, NJ and a couple years ago had the ultimate pleasure of fly fishing in MT.

Welcome!!! Glad to have another trout guy on here. Sometimes I think these Rockfish, Hybrid, Stripe, White Bass, Sand Bass, or whatever you call those fish, fisherman were trying to overtake the forum....LOL

Seriously glad to have you with us, there is a wealth of knowledge here on the board. Several of us frequent the Caney so just holler if you have any questions. Also search back through the old threads, lots of good info there.

I have taken one trip out to the caney, mostly as a scouting trip as it was back in March when the river was out of the banks. I am looking forward to fishing it though and I am contemplating getting a jon boat (or similar) now.

I'd love to get out there today, but I don't know if it's fishable from the bank anywhere with the generation schedule.

ETA, I just saw the other post about the caney and that's what I figured as far as being unfishable from the bank right now.

I guess I'll probably head down to the old lock 6 and try for some ???

The Caney is 2 different rivers in one. During non generation times it is a slow moving river. Several deep holes connected by shallow shoals. IT is a kayakers dream as you get to experience different types of water on a single trip. It is also a great river to wade during this time as there are many access points and as I mentioned it is slow moving.

During generation it is a fast moving deeper river. Depending on the number of units and CFS release it can be a dangerous river but dont let that scare you away from it. Just use caution and always be aware of your surroundings. Several of us fish it during generation using Riverhawks or similar river boats or wide jon boats. The Caney is an awesome brown trout fishery that contains some mighty nice large browns. (search through the old posts, especially ones by a member Old Sailor)

Roy has summed up the Caney pretty well. The only thing left off is during summer there is a major canoe hatch that goes on. From the looks of it this year, it isn't limited to the top 5 miles on the river like in the past. I am not steering you away by no means just plan for it. The fishing is still good even with the added boats.

Right now I wish I knew more about the area, because I'm considering getting out in the rain and while it's not a huge deal, if I'm gonna get soaked, I might as well catch some fish while doing it.

Welcome! You are in a great area for fishing as you may know. This is a great forum with alot of knowledge. Glad to have u on the forum.

Travis I wished you hadnt mentioned the canoe hatch. My therapist told me to try to block that out of my memory and here you are bringing it up again. The canoe hatch is a dreadful thing that should be avoided by all anglers. One can only hope for the first frost when it kills most of the canoe hatch.

Now I must go see my therapist.........

:D I am right there with you on that one...heck if it never got above 55 here I wouldn't complain too much.

If you're bank bound about any of the Dams close by minus Cordell Hull (due to bank access may still be closed) is good fishing in the summer when they are running. Rain doesn't bother it too much.

Welcome to the forum! You can fish right below Center Hill dam on the steps on the caney and get into some nice trout, even on high water.

Thanks for the tip. To get to that area I would cross over the dam, right? Opposite side as the Happy Hollow launch?

Yes. Go past Happy turn right at Big Rock Market then over the Dam and turn right. The road leading up to the Dam is the first right at the campground.

Make sure you have some Kastmaster spoons and stickbaits. Heavy inline spinners work too under generation.
