Trout Stock
 

I'm assuming TRWA will be stocking as scheduled even with all the Corp of Engineers hub-bub...At JPP tailwaters, how far will the trout travel down the Stones? As far as Lebanon Road? Or will they make down to the Cumberland? Whats your method on catching these farm fresh trout? TM's? Corn? Spinners?

I used to catch em between the dam and Kohls.. You have to walk the greenway and look for access to the river, they'll be there.

You can catch around a 100 a day there using Trout Magnet. But corn.....spinners....will work also. I used to fish there until I went to Normandy.....which is only 42 miles versus 60 miles. If the water is real low there you will see what looks like a sidewalk by the generator output......it is really a wall. Stand on top of it and catch all the trout you want. They will stack up there.

Do the trout ever get to decent size down there? Or are some larger ones stocked? Last time I was there I was fishing with the TM and caught several fish. One rainbow measuring a hair under 14 inches and one that was a few inches bigger, I got a look at it and it looked to be approaching 18 inches. Right as I was leaning over to pick it up it shook it's way free. I was pretty upset haha. Was I way off on my guess of 18 inches or are they sometimes caught that big below the dam? This was late in the Spring.

Every time a truck dumps trout into one of the winter stocking areas they release a couple of really nice trout...probably less than a dozen at each location. From what I have read and been told by trout biologist if a stream has a good food source those stockers can grow an inch a month for a few months. Normandy tailrace has a huge crawfish population and the trout that were put there in November have some good shoulders on them by May and June. But at Percy they are not there long enough to do much growing at all.

Alpha, I think you really like the bison color for crappie, what are your go to colors for the stocker trout? and is it best with little or no generation? thanks.

It is very difficult to fish a Trout Magnet during generation. But at Percy if they are generating just fish on the other side and you can stay out of the fast current. I really like black...Bison. But white...pink....Purple Redemption are good also. No matter what color you are using if you are catching fish on that color...and they stop biting...try switching colors.

I should mention...and I think I have posted it before....but I like the Bison colored Trout Magnet for crappie at Nickajack. If the crappie are in my spot below dam at Pickwick they much prefer a Midnight Blue Crappie Magnet over a Trout Magnet. I have read many times each body of water will have it's own characteristics for color of lure...size.....and so on....and I have found that to be true.

I'd like to try out my new Big Tuna this weekend. Are there access points on the JPP tailwater?

I have caught them as far down as Heartland Park.

Well there is the new boat ramp at the mouth. But when I used to fish there I would see people just put their kayaks in on the generator side and carry them down the bank by a drain pipe from the parking lot. It is not difficult to do with two people.

There is bank fishing access on both sides of the Tailwater. The Greenway runs along the river all the way to Kohl's at Lebanon Rd. Only boat access is at Heartland Park but you could put a kayak in below the bridge at Lebanon Rd.

Thanx for all the replies! Does it take long for the stocker trout to get accustomed to their new environment before they begin to hit? Are they hitting out of hunger or of a predator nature? Do they travel much?

I'm looking forward to putting my Trout stamp to use for the next couple of months!!
