Started fishing this morning at 9:00 AM. The Gills were not where they had been being. They have moved out even deeper. The only thing I could reach them with was an 1/8 ounce jig head with a # 3 hook. While I know that really big Gills have no problem with that size hook I just miss too many with a hook that big. Still managed to catch 10 of the 9 inch Gills. Got into a few Smallies and Spots. Caught the one Smallie that measured 16 inches. Caught a couple more at the 12 inch mark. Caught my personal best Spot today....it was 18 inches and man was he fat. Caught a couple more Spots at 13 inches. I have got to find some 1/8 ounce jig heads before next Thursday with a size 8 or 6 hook. It was a great day to be out.

You fish from the bank?

At the place I fished today..yes. There is no close kayak access. I would have to paddle a couple of miles to get there and dodge boats...barges. If I could fish it from a kayak it would open up a ton of fishing possibilities. A younger and fitter man would take the kayak down those rocks.....I cant do that.

Was this trout magnets or crappie magnets this time?

The bass were caught on a 5mm tungsten jig head....size 8 hook.....with a Bison colored Trout Magnet body. The Gills were caught with a 1/8 ounce jig head with a size 3 hook with the same color Trout Magnet body. I have some Wooly Bugs coming tied on a 5mm tungsten bead.....they work pretty good but after 5 fish the things start to untie. I have no clue the weight of these tungsten heads but I think in the 1/20 range.

The Mooska Tung jig that Northland sells is a 5mm on a #12 and weighs 1/16oz.

Thanks....I got my first bunch through them and I have ordered 50 more but they sure take their time on shipping an item out. I called in the last order and she assured me would be in the mail last Wednesday. She also told me that after the article came out from InFisherman magazine they had orders of over 10,000 jigs in one night....the power of the media....LOL.

Dad and I talked Sunday about how he thinks just targeting gills/crappie is going to be the way to go for him. We've bass fished for so long and now he's taken up some fly fishing on the Caney so chasing gills/crappie in addition to that will be some nice relaxin fishing for him.

He said, "bass fishing is just too darn expensive anymore." I kinda agree.

Mercy... you cover some ground. Nickajack one day and Pickwick the next. Mobile, agile and hostile! :D

Actually Richard you can leave out the agile and hostile...LOL. I would like to say Nickajack is my limit on range....but I keep hearing how great the fishing is in the tailrace below Chicamauga that I will try it sooner or later. I am hoping that with the kayak I can find some good spots on Percy or Old Hickory.
