Pickwick 6-25-2012
 

Arrived at Pickwick at about 11:30AM. Was really excited to try out some new lures if the fish were in the "Jumps". Started out with a Storm Wildeye Suspending Jerk bait...3 inches long version. Caught 6 of the bigger bass in the pics before ever taking the first pic. All of you who fish the jumps know it is hard to stop and take time to take pics. I took one pic each...one representing the bigger bass I was catching......one for the smaller bass I was catching...and one for the White Bass I was catching. The smaller Large mouths would hit without any jumps going on...I caught a bunch of them using the 1/8 ounce Kastmaster in the pic on my light action rod with 4# test NanoFil. Caught 15 of the bass like the larger one. The jumps had to be going on to get them. Just would cast the jerk bait and one around that size would hit it. Switched out to a Kastmaster 1/4 ounce with a single hook as it was taking way too much time to get the trebles out of the bigger bass...I was losing valuable time. Caught a couple on that bait but I don't think I have the right single hook on there...I think it is too small. Then switched out to the 1/4 ounce Kastmaster with the trebles and caught the rest of the larger bass with it. The White Bass were all caught at the wall of the dam with the 1/8 ounce Kastmaster. Didn't catch a single White Bass in the jumps. The jumps got farther and farther apart as the day wore on. But using the light action setup could still catch fish but just not any big ones. The 15 largest bass were all caught by 2:00PM and they were over with. From then until I left at 6:30 just the smaller ones and Stripes. Need to somehow get a kayak down those rocks and can run the whole wall and stay on the larger fish all day...but I'm no spring chicken.

Yeah it was a good day. If anyone wants to ride along with me down there one day I would be more than happy to oblige. My car has no back seats as I took them out to make it a fishing car....LOL. So only have room for one. Pickwick is an awesome fishery. It doesn't take a lot of fishing skills to do what I did yesterday. When the jumps are going on the big bass will hit if you can get the right size bait to where hey are jumping. While I have fished this same spot over the years this is the first time in the summer I have fished it. It is usually in spring that I fish this spot. During summer would fish below dam and catch the White Bass in the jumps....but very few Large Mouth.

That's a healthy bass for 4# line.

Nice catch. If it wasn't so dang far that would be a fun trip to learn from the expert. But living 2 exits from KY state line makes it quite a drive for bass.

Thanks, I'm just a fisherman who uses the kayak as a tool to get to the fish. It's fun, environmentally friendly, and I get a little exercise while I'm at it. My schedule has opened up so I'll now be able to get on the water more.
