Cataloochee in October
Headed to Cataloochee this weekend and am a newbie to flyfishing. Anyone have any recent reports or advice?

If I remember correctly that creek is in the valley and runs through open fields. It is probably the only one in the mountain streams that you could hopper fish like out west. It may be too late for them up there but I'd keep some on hand just in case.
Browns were the main reason to fish in that stretch but there are rainbows and brookies in there too. Stick with bugs or terrestrials on top.. in my opinion. You'll probably see Elk in the valley too. |

Our trip to Cataloochee was a great success. I managed 4 brook trout and one rainbow on Caldwell branch. I missed many others due to lack of experience and one for poor knot tying. I also lost many flies (12+) in only about 7 hours of fishing. Fish were biting on both red and yellow humpy's, and royal coachman's. Size seemed to be more important than color or pattern.
My son caught a monster brookie on a Trout magnet. All in all a great trip considering this was only my third trip out with flyrod in hand. R. Bull |
Awesome man.
You see any Elk or have the quota hunts scared them all into hiding. |
Nice fish..sounds like a great trip.
