Old Hickory Sunday 3/4

Got out Sunday morning and fished till noon. A bit nippy at sun up. Water temps 48 or so around the ramp at Avondale. Ran down to Cedar Creek and started on the creek on the left across from the island at the mouth of Cedar Creek. Threw square bills, bladed jigs and finally picked up a couple on jerk baits. Water was stained and 50-51 in that area. Went around the corner and fished the area on the left by the fuel docks, went back to the bridge rip rap. Same baits no takers. Ran into Cedar Creek to the left branch, ran all the way back to the bridge. All throughout that flat with the stumps it was loaded with Shad. Some top water action but nothing steady. Water temps were 52-53 and caught several short chunks on jerk bait and small square bills. Fished the left side docks out to the mouth of that branch. All fish caught in 3’ or less, all very pale but hit hard. All indications of fish making their way to spawn position. Water was 55 when I left.

Main river, muddy with heavy current. Buoys were pulled half way under. Very Little floating debris in the mid-lake area.

I can't wait for the grass beds to start getting a little green on that lake.

The shame of it is, grass on Old Hickory is now largely limited to the cane grass on the shoreline out to maybe 5’ depths. The hydrilla and coontail is gone, perhaps forever, in the deeper zones along the river channel and in the major creeks. Summer and early fall frog fishing matted grass from the steam plant down to Spencer Creek junction is a thing of the past.

The grass is making a comeback.. I sae lots of water willow, and small pods of hydrilla and milfoil last year.

Deezelteck - I caught several fish Sunday on that rod you sold me with a square bill crankbait. Perfect tip action for that application.

The coontail is definitely starting to comeback. I found quite a bit of sparse patches of it last summer
