New Fish Finder...finally!
 

Well after much him-hawing around, i finally got 1 of 2 new fishfinders for the boat. Academy had this one on clearance for $499, regular $699 so i jumped on it. I know the replacement is already on the market....the Hook series so im hoping this one will do me for a few years.
It will be going on the bow being the 7" screen so i can fine tune all my vertical fishing. Pretty pumped up about having this unit with the mapping and chirp in 1 unit.
I will be using it either tomorrow afternoon or sunday for sure.
I will check out some you tube videos tonight for setting options and fine tuning.
Where is a good source for the Navionics Cards?
Anybody got any comments on this unit good or bad i would love to hear them?

I've been using that unit since March of 2015, and I really like it. I don't use a card in mine.

I have the 5 and mounted my skimmer direct to the trolling motor as the flimsy plastic adapter breaks with just a slight hit.

so what do you "see" when you have page set to Map view? Just a blue chart plotter screen?

Yeah, just the outline of the bank, creeks, and creek channels. I usually have my phone with Navionics running if I'm fishing a hump, or particular structure.

Ok cool! glad it gives me the general area of where im at then with out a card.
Im gonna eventually get a 5" side scan for the console. My plan is to use the side image while running, mark it, then fine tune with the chirp/down imaging on the bow.
Im really looking forward to getting over some brush and seeing the detail with my own eyes! lol

Congrats on your new unit. Nothing bad to be said about any of these units when you get into the ones with 7 inch screens and bigger. Far too many people get hung up on brand loyalty when discussing sonar. That unit will do anything you want to do for vertical fishing. The sonar world is changing faster than ever before...which is good for us consumers.

Thanks! i see the replacement units are the Hook Series. I cant pretend to know much about them, but i dont think there is much difference in my unit versus the Hook unit.

I had an elite 7 and sold it and bought a "used" HDS gen2 7. I kept the HDI transducer so I could still have downscan ar my trolling motor. I like everything about the Elite except how slow the chart populates. I could move my boat with the trolling motor faster than the chart could keep up. The downscan images are great. I just needed a fast processor.

Im jigging tomorrow so thats gonna be the true test for me. Lol

If you are running an Elite 7 you will have no problem watching your jig on your screen as long as you are over it.

Yeah for a low cost unit, its pretty slick! seeing the actual white bass on the screen then catching them was cool. It is a little slower than my grey screen humminbird as far as chartspeed, but im good with that for what i use it for.

From 2001-2004 I owned 4 different sonar units. A couple of them were high dollar units for the time. But even the mid and lower price units today are so good it is unreal. I have used a jig as small as 1/16 ounce for vertical jigging and am able to see it pretty good. I can put a tungsten jig on that is the same physical dimensions as the lead 1/16 and it looks huge on the screen....LOL. Vertical jigging is just a lot of fun when you can watch your jig and see the fish hit it.
