Update on Caney?

Anybody got a general update on Caney Fork? Haven't been over there in almost 2 years, but getting itch to go back. Wasn't sure how conditions have been lately.

Unfortunately, the kayak hatch has taken over.

True Enough. The plastic navy has been deployed for summer exercises. But you can still run the lower half: from Carthage up to the Ag center with bigger engines, or from the Ag center up as far as you care with skinny water rigs.

I was part of the hatch last weekend. First time I have been up there in many years, back when I fished it in relative peace.

I'd say Saturday there were 500+ of us kayaking. In fact, it was too many to even enjoy kayaking....people drinking, singing, yelling, peeing, cussing....you name it. Tried to fish from my kayak, but that was a challenge. The outfitter said come on a weekday if you want to fish - way, way better.

I apologize for joining the yellow army, but it was planned by the ladies :)

I was thinking about going tomorrow but I have a feeling it's going to be pretty busy.

Yikes. Thanks for the replies. Will definitely plan a weekday trip.

I fly fished by the dam on two occasions. I haven't had great luck at the Caney during the past 2 years. One of the guys at Fly South told me people were catching big fish out there.

I only caught a few small stockers by the dam (including some skipjack).

The kayak hatch is intense but if you avoid the weekend, you'll do ok.

For what it's worth...
I haven't been on the Caney in some time, but if I had to pick two patterns, I would drift a zebra midge or go when they are running one generator and work a white streamer for the big browns. Make that three patterns...Seeing a lot of mayflies on the lakes lately, so you may want a nice dry fly assortment in your pack just in case. Explore down river away from the dam.
There are some big ones to be had. Good luck!

I fished it heavy during the spring. Pheasant tails, guacamole stickbug and black cone head wolly bugger are my 3. I like fishing by the highway rest area
