Lot of fun today.

Had a great day on the Caney Fork. My nephew was wanting some crappie.....and I just wanted to fish.....no matter the specie. We hit the water at 8:30 a.m. and left the water at 2:30 p.m. The fish counter read 225 when we left. Most of those were 11-12 inch brook trout. My nephew took home a limit of 15 nice crappie...the majority being black nose. We probably had about 15 crappie that were just short.......those black nose are chunky fish but not being legal back they went. I was using the Ice Cube 6’ 9” Mebaru UL rod spooled with SOS 2# test with a section of Phantom 2# test fluorocarbon leader attached to a 1/16 ounce ball head jig with a #6 hook......with a Bison Colored Trout Magnet. My nephew had the Trout Slayer Series UL rod with the Ballo spinning reel spooled with SOS 2# test line also but was using a Midnight Blue ThunderHawk Dancer body on a 1/16 ounce Dancer jig head with a #6 hook. Water temps were 49.5 degrees. It was my kind of day....lots of action. Those Brookies are extremely aggressive and don’t give up. The majority of the Trout were caught casting. The crappie were all caught single pole trolling.....at a speed between .9-1.1 MPH.........through a spot they were holding on all day.....see sonar image. Many times trolling through we would double up. All in all a fantastic day! Life is good!

Regards

Great day!!! :)
I wanted to get out today but work kept me off the water
Rain and windy tomorrow and snow/ice Friday, not looking good...

Congratulations Randy.
Sounds like you guys had an awesome fishing trip.
It's always fun when a plan comes together
Having the equipment like you do, makes it much more likely to happen.
I sometimes wonder if folks don't realize the value of graphs like yours that show the details yours does?
It let's you know EXACTLY where the fish are and where they arent.
Fishing where the fish aren't results in a wasted trip.
Fishing where they are schooled up results in sore wrists/arms and a happy faced angler.
Fish on, young man!

Thanks for the kind comment Merv. Don’t have to tell your you how important that sonar is. We started out where the crappie usually are......but they were not there. I fished for a while catching trout after trout and my nephew was getting antsy. So I pulled off the trout and started scanning for crappie. Found them....threw out the marker then figured out the best way to catch them. Your comment is not better demonstrated than what happened up there yesterday. My nephew had told some guys where to fish for crappie......but they caught none off those spots either. As we were pulling in a double they got close and half jokingly told my nephew “You’ve been holding out on us”. Well we didn’t hold out on anyone. Just had the equipment and sense to go looking for crappie. Those units save so much time. Hope you’re out fishing today. Looking forward to some fish pics.

Randy, I was kind of surprised you used a flouro leader on the 2lb mono. Do you do that for abrasion or do you think the SOS is visible enough to make a difference. Just bought some sos 2lb based on all you feedback but didn't think about adding a leader.

In trout waters a fluorocarbon leader is a must. Without it you may still catch some trout but with it your catch rate goes way up. I also use it in lakes like Dale Hollow.....Center Hill.....and sometimes below Nickajack......having fished that tail race for the past 7 months I have been very surprised at how clear that water can be there at times. The Phantom fluorocarbon leader is pretty cheap. I have been using fluorocarbon leader so long that sometimes I forget to mention that I was using it. Jeff Smith taught me about fluorocarbon leader a long time ago. It can get to be a pain tying 2 knots but it is well worth the effort.

That's a great day. I took tomorrow off to fish. The forecast has me pretty bummed out.

Yeah the weather is not being kind to us that’s for sure. In looking at 10 days out looks like Thursday might be decent enough to fish. But then wonder what places will get frozen again....LOL.
