"Big Bass Guru" Mike Long exposed as a fraud

Admittedly until yesterday I had never heard of Mike Long. He is known as the best big bass fisherman in the world and is from the San Diego area. I stumbled across an article about him and how he has tricked the bass world for decades. He has cheated his way to earning hundreds of thousands of dollars in bass tournaments in California and big bass championships. If you google Mike Long article, the article featured on SDFish.com will come up. It is a very long but fascinating article that exposes this man as a fraud. The stories range from snagging fish off beds, to hiding fish in his boat to weigh in tournaments, to using fish that other people caught to claim lake records for himself. It also talks about him transporting fish from one lake to another to claim lake records. If you have the time, I would highly suggest reading the article. I started reading it and couldn't stop and it took a while to read it all but it's fascinating.

Like you, I had never heard of the guy. I read the entire article last week. Very long read but well worth it. This guy was corrupted by money and fame. He would and did just about anything to achieve his goals. Glad he was exposed for what he was. A fraud and a poor fisherman.

There have been several on JPP caught by TWRA... one who took years but they got him. Another gill netting the Saugeye and KatFish. Lots of Low Life out there not worth the powder to blow them to hell...prolly vote democrap to boot.

This is an amazing story. I could not imagine my life based on a lie. I don't know how people can deal with the guilt. Maybe they believe it after a while but I know I couldn't deal with it.

Yea I read that article a few days ago... He should be stripped of any record and his name removed from all fishing records as far as I'm concerned.

I’ve followed Mike Long since the late 90’s early 2000’s. He’s been on the cover of Bassmaster magazine a couple times, done a lot of good in the fishing community. He was one of the guys that I grew up wanting to fish with and learn from because he was a big bass specialist. We all have those people we want to fish with. It really saddened me when I saw the article and video of him snagging bass off the beds and posting them on Instagram saying he caught it on a jig or big swim bait. He quickly deleted ALL of his social media. No longer has a YouTube channel or Facebook or Instagram. His rod sponsor quickly pulled his signature rod off the market, put a big treble hook picture on the rods and donated them to organizations for kids. There is a special place in hell for people like him. He deserves all the bad that’s coming his way for all of the deception he’s done.

Listen to Bass Talk Live from this past Monday with Ken Duke....they talk a lot about it and go waaaay in depth.

It's the reason I don't enter pay-to-enter tournaments. It's amazing how little money it takes for people to steal. From what I've seen and heard second hand over the years; I'd guess at LEAST 40% of the take-home earnings are via theft.

I'm happy to give to charities when I know 100% goes to the charity (volunteer staff, and no cash payouts); but those are seen very seldom. Don't think I've ever seen one in Middle TN.

Disheartening, to say the least; but this guy is just the one making a little ripple; he decided to go big. The rest of the petty theft adds up to the biggest money writ large.

Look up Doug Hannon, he was the true Bass Professor. Nothing fake about him.

Yea i'm wondering about one or two with my catfishing tourn..

I think there was a charity bass tourn last month on OH

I entered 2 tournys on JPP years ago, would have either won or placed both times, each tourny was rigged...never will spend a penny on any type of tourny ever again, would rather donate the money to Salvation Army. Crooks...as long as money is involved there is cheating...just look at the democraps.

I agree with you that people cheat in bass fishing tournaments. Word tends to get around on the guys to look out for. I do not believe that the number is anywhere near 40% of the money won is by cheaters. There are a couple guys that I keep an eye on if I'm fishing a tournament that I know they are signed up. I have no concrete proof of anyone that I know of that cheats in bass fishing but I have my suspicions and know the character of a couple people. If I had concrete proof then I would certainly put their name out there. I fish tournaments because I'm very competitive. I enjoy fishing against people I'm suspicious of because when I beat them it's even sweeter knowing they could cheat and still not get me.

There is a guy that I know very well that will not speak to me to this day because I outed him as a cheater. I have personally witnessed this man cheat at golf and at poker. One of my friends was gonna have a high stakes golf match with this man and I warned him that he would probably get cheated. A friend of the cheater over heard this conversation and the cheater has not spoken to me since even though I've seen him several times. The cheater also happens to fish some of the biggest bass tournaments in the south east and fishes all of the big tournaments around here. He has won a couple of big tournaments and I can only assume that he somehow cheated because Of his past. The crazy thing about this guy is that he's actually really good at fishing, golf, and poker. He doesn't have to cheat to be successful but he has done it anyway. I have to say that I've never witnessed or have first hand knowledge that he's cheated in bass tournaments but I'm always skeptical when I see that he's won a tournament or cashed a check.
