Nice Striper at the Gallatin Steam Plant

The skipjacks were crazy at the steam plant Saturday. We caught over 100. HUGE. I saw a guy using about a 15" skipjack catch a 34 pound striper. He hadn't been fishing for 5 mins. I saw him weigh it and he threw it back. No Tilapia of any size this time.

whats the method for catching the skipjack there? i've used trout magnets and little spinners w/ some success, but not at GSP.

Catching them is not the problem, finding skipjack is the problem :) If you find them busting they're pretty easy to catch with a Sabiki rig or Double curly tail jigs about 12-18" apart on 1/8 ounce jig heads. Dialing in the right speed is key. I find they usually like a burning fast retrieval.

I used Microlite gear for skippies... It seems a "PULSE ACTION RETRIEVE" really sets them off. I held the reel knob (no rotation) and cranked the rod. This gives a jerking pulse .... <'TK><:)

A small small spoon or drop shot a trout magnet. Sabiki rigs are great too.

We were there Saturday afternoon and everywhere you looked someone was reeling one in. Some big ones too. They were everywhere. Haven’t seen a lot about tilapia lately. Anyone been on them this winter?
