Lake Okeechobee fishing
So, my wife talked me into going to see her family in south Florida in a couple weeks for vacation. I looked tonight and we are about a hour and a half from the big O. I am close to Clewiston and looking to fish that area. I am strapping the kayak to the Edge and taking it...... First question, will I die on the big O in the yak? Second question is does anyone have any idea where to fish in that area? CALLING SALTY!!!!!!!!!

I jump at every chance to fish with other people especially from different states to attempt to pick up on techniques...just so happens I fished with a guy who fishes tournaments on Lake Okeechobee. We fished Okatibbee Lake in Mississippi and he indicated it was very much like Okeechobee which is around 6' at its deepest. When we started off he said we would fish shallow so I go with a baby brush hog on with a 3/16 bullet weight, he tied on a Watermelon cut tail Senko with a super-line 5/0 hook 14-17# test. We fished 6" to 1' of water...the most shallow I have ever fished and he absolutely schooled me, about 7 to 1 until I took the weight off and added a super-line hook and only then did I start to catch numbers fish. I do want to say my second cast was a 6# LM though which was big fish of the day.
Lesson Learned: On shallow lakes...fish super-duper shallow and never ever overlook 6" water. |
I know it will be a lot of flipping and frogging. I'm concerned about gators, probably worried about nothing though.

Yeah, I want no part of that in my Yak. |
Last gator/kayak fishing video i seen involved a jug line....im sure you seen it! Lol
Im sure you will be fine though. However i would suggest a little history on the american alligator. I recommend the movie Lake Placcid. The only difference is the gators in florida are bigger. |

Man, don't talk like that. I'm already convinced I'm going to get knocked out of the yak by a gator. If that does not happen I'm going to get knocked out of the yak by a shark while fishing the bay. The good thing is that at least I will die while doing something I love...... I don't want to get eaten. |
Well dont be going down to florida and dying on me! i need somebody to waste hours and hours fishing normandy and snapping rods! lol

When! Let us both get back from Florida and do this. |
The wind can be a real issue on the lake, and would be of greater concern to me than the gators. On OH, you can only blown so far off course without hitting the other bank. Not so on the big O. There are canals around if the wind is too strong for the big water. Fisheatiing creek would be a bit of a drive from Clewiston, but it sounds like a fun float. I like the bass fishing there but if I was going there this time of year I'd spend a large portion of time on the bluegills.

I'm going to go chase some reds too. I've got a few options but really feel I need to spend a day on the big O just because it's the O.

I just watched an older episode of Fishin Affliction the other night and they were fishing the "canals" on O. Flipping creature type baits. Then big dawg got his boat stuck. Lol
