Do you mean the thrust washer behind the prop (lower unit side) or the washer behind the nut? Most certainly in either case your prop would be floating on the prop shaft. If the thrust washer was missing the barrel of the prop could have been rubbing the lower unit case, not a good scenario.

Luckily it is just the nut spacer ordered a couple of them and some new cotter pins, going to drain and inspect the lower unit oil this weekend keeping fingers crossed it's not milky or no metal shavings.

Not looking good I couldn't even get the lower drain plug out, it stripped even with using the biggest flat head I could find

Sorry to hear that. If this is an Evinrude/Johnson/OMC-BRP engine the world's greatest lower unit guy lives in Charleston, TN. Eddie Pope. Sign on the BassBoatCentral.com forum and look up "Gearcaseman". Carry it down there and get it fixed right.
