About two weeks ago the shad at 4 Corners were balled up so thick you could've walked on them. I'm now noticing a lot of dead ones floating or barely hanging on and, of course, the bird feathers are everywhere. I honestly think some of the gulls are so full they can't fly. The dead and dying shad don't appear to be injured though. Anyone seeing this on other parts of the lake right now? Anyone know what's causing it?

It is an annual happening.

Seems like it took longer this year for the shad kill to happen.

Merv was later taking his annual bath in the river.

Did you notice any change in water temp on your graph between the two trips?

I've noticed shad as thick as I've ever seen them on Priest this winter but I haven't seen any die off unfortunately. I've been fishing mainly between Fate Sanders and Jefferson Springs.

Water temps on JPP. Stones river at Jefferson Street launch, 46.5 degrees.
Hobson Pike bridge to 4.5 point (across from Hole in the Wall) 42.5 degrees.
Stripers holding in the deep channels, 40 to 50 ft deep in the trees.
Most bait balls were 40 ft deep.

The male shad, being nagged by their wives, go into shock and die.

That's pretty cold. It's gonna be a while before they start waking up there.

Never seen shad nagging but I've heard the Egrets do that, you can always tell which one is the woman!

We witnessed that last time at the steamplant. I felt bad for the guy.

Get ready for a shad die off in the Stones river.....I'm gonna give my socks and underwear their annual washing.
Could reach as far as the confluence (SAMBOLIE, that means : a place where two or more rivers or streams join to become one) of Fall creek, Spring creek, and the Stones rivers.
I would recommend not eating any fish from those areas for a week or two.
SAMBOLIE, please feel free to eat all you can catch. OH! THAT"S RIGHT! YOU NEVER CATCH ANY FISH!

Explaining the definition to him on the forum isn't going to do him any good if he can't read...

I'm hoping his wife reads it and informs him......tho I doubt if she wants to talk to him either.

Why would you not recommend eating the fish caught around the confluence? Just wondering? Never heard of that before..

I have seen die offs on Old Hickory and Center Hill.
Below Caney the other day there were slicks of dead shad, looked like a tanker of shad had crashed on the rocks and belching out shad for days .
Needless to say the gulls were in paradise.
