View Full Version : A little slow on the Caney.

Hit Caney Fork this morning till about 2 PM.
The bite seemed to slow down after they turned off the generator at 10 AM. Ended up with 4 largemouth one skipjack and 10 Trout. The sunrise going up 40 E. this morning was sure worth the trip though. All fish caught on a Milli trout magnet.

Andy.

Seems to be the norm today on the fishing there. Heard from browntrout and he says same.

That makes me feel a little better if he says its slow I know it slow! My younger cousin just had a baby in Celina,Tennessee so I think me and the wifey will go visit her tomorrow. I can hear her now "honey we're just going to visit the baby why are your waders and fishing pole in the backseat".😬

Yeah it was slow. Saw some huge trout hitting the water but just could not coax one of them to hit. Lot of people on the river today. Glad we had a window where we could wade for a little while. TCINTN was fishing with me today. He had a GOOD one get off but I will let him tell the story.......

Roy.... My wife and I made it out there today. We were in camo waders just down from the put in on the north side of the river... Off the island. Anyways, we were using TMs for the first time ever in my life. I caught one 12in rainbow. Wife didn't get any which irked her :) ... But it did seem slow. Caught him on a full green TM. Was fun trying to get the hang of it. Through some mepps too w/ no luck. There were a lot of people. Different than Montana. Everyone seemed the keep their space though. It was a great day.

I wondered if you were up there. It was tuff today. Some of the more popular colors of TM on the Caney are White, Chartreuse, Pink, Salmon Fix, Gainer, Mealworm, and Purple Haze. We primarily are using the Chartreuse head now and sometimes the black. I normally have on a blue Trout Magnet hat and a 9 foot spinning rod. If you see me holla!!! I will be taking a break from the Caney for the next 3 months to chase smallmouth on the lake.

We will be on the lookout. My wife was throwing a pink and pink/white out. We will have to try different colored heads.... Maybe a little heavier than what we had. Hard to get a cast out past 10-15ft. Good luck with the smallies!

Are you using the 2lb line and leader?

6'6" pole, 4lb flurocarbon line, no leader. Used a floating indicator set to depth so the TM Road on bottom. Sounds like we need longer poles for a longer fishing column, 18in of leader. Casting distance was an inhibitor. Had no idea there were large mouth in that river. Crazy!

You won't be able to cast a Trout Magnet far at all on 4# test FC line. If you will fish with 2# test mono and use a 2# test fluorocarbon leader you will get great casting distance and a much better catch rate. If you go to 2# test you can put a size B split shot about 18 inches above the Trout Magnet. I know a lot who try to use 4# test and when they make the switch to 2# test their catch rate goes way up. What is the action and power of your rod?

Yep, the LM are there and hard to target. I usually only catch them in the pond area along the bluff wall and at the waterfalls, mainly at night. SM are in there too and I usually only catch numbers of them downstream past the smith fork creek confluence.

That makes sense. I was tentative on the 2# mono, so went with 4#. Our reels are rated for 4-8lb test; wonder if 2# would work? I appreciate the insight on the 2# FC leader. Would have never thought of that. We are using M action rods, and M power rods. Pretty generic. What would you suggest?

Yeah that's not the rod to have for what you are trying to do.....sounds like the reels are large also...but of course any reel can hold 2# test line but sounds like the size of your reel it would take 320 yards or more to fill it with 2# test. I would suggest an UL rod rated to throw a 1/64 ounce lure...those are hard to find....but an UL rated to throw 1/32 is easy to find and it will work fine. The action is a personal preference thing but I like a rod with a fast tip for trout. Here is a link to what I consider a great rod for the money. https://www.troutmagnet.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=7&products_id=127&zenid=c09f586a1f9f8a85ab01bdc51569ba02

BassPro also sells UL rods. For a reel I would get something in the Shimano 1000 series or another well known brand with the same series size....meaning designed for UL fishing usually rated for 2-6 pound test line. Trout Magnet also sells the Shimano reels on their website and they have a flat rate shipping of only $5.95. If you are coming to the fishing show at the Fairgrounds this weekend stop by the Trout Magnet booth and I...and others, will be happy to meet you and talk about fishing the Magnet for trout....and other specie. Plus you will run into a lot of forum members there. The rods and reels will be for sale at the show so you can see one before you purchase....plus all TM gear....line....lures. But whether you buy anything or not stop by the booth and we will answer any questions you may have.

I was there today too. It was crowded and a little slow, but it was still a joy to be on the water. I think everyone is getting cabin fever.

I caught two brook trout on a white rooster tail. My first hit came moments after complaining to another kayaker that the bite was slow. I couldn't get any hits on the black spinner or the trout magnet (though I admit to being a trout magnet newbie).

I did see a HUGE paddlefish swim by me. It startled me a bit as I've never seen one before. It brought to mind the trash compactor scene in Star Wars.

Idaho Boy, we chatted a bit and I was a certified witness to one of your catches.

I would echo everything that Alpha says. When I started fishing the TM I had no luck. When I switched to the 2lb, it was like a whole new world. If you are in Nashville this weekend Trout Magnet will have a big booth at the fishing show and all of the stuff that you need will be there and be on sale. I would suggest you coming by. You can also meet the owner of the company. Myself, Alpha, and TCINTN will be working it and we would love to meet you.

I appreciate everything you and Alpha shared with us. Is the fishing show this weekend, as in now, or this coming weekend? We would love to come by! We will be buying the SLS rods and shimano 1000 reels. Will snag some line/leader too. Excited to experience the difference!

It was great to see you on the water Doc!

Got to spend a few hours on the Caney with Browntrout. Things started off so slow and I started trying all colors, different jig heads and then I wound up changing the floro to 6X Seaguar,24" tied on tp a 36" piece of 5X Seaguar floro.
Things picked up and caught 22.Most were Brown and one Brook. 17 were Rainbows.
When we first got there I latched on to a big old trout,it stripped out some line and then that sound you do not want to hear, snap it was gone. We will meet again.
Most of the trout were caught on chartreuse jig heads with white T M.Next color was bubble gum.
Great day but they do need to sleuice.

Are you guys using split shots with the float technique? If so are you pinching it on to the flouro or S.O.S.?

Most will use a size B split shot...more depending on current. Just keep it barely off the bottom. My leader is usually so long I pinch it on the FC leader....but it can slip on the FC. But it works out.

To the FC, it holds good enough.

Good deal. I ordered the SOS 2lb. bulk spool and phantom leader. I have used the 4lb. PLine flouro for a few years now with great results, but want to increase cast distance. Having that said should I just strip off 50% of the existing PLine on my Sedona 1000 and leave for backing or re-spool completely with 2lb SOS?

I always completely respool because the line comes in such big spools and I get it so cheap. Either way would work.

I missed this thread earlier, good insight on the line and lures for the caney plus normal trout magnet fishing. Does anyone fish the double Tmag set up on the caney? I usually fish the double for everything but was not sure if it works for trout. We are going to do a float in the spring.

Won't be attending the fishing show. Its usually bait shop owners trying to sell off their old stock. I went last year and saw a rack of Trilene fishing line that had dust on the top of the boxes. That was the last straw for me.
Not to say there aren't a few good deals but, good luck to ya.

That was 4 or 5 years a go and at this age it is a guess. But looking at where I was that last day,it looks like it was running.
The last day when I was on the river I had left my cap in truck plus some one got on me for having a white t-shirt on because it would scare the fish off.
Also,a gentleman fly-fishing just up from me was taking pictures almost constantly. I was catching a fish on almost every cast.Just one of those days.
The picture of trout in video was the last one for 200.
I believe if I had the time and fortitude I could do it again. Also that last day,I caught most of the trout in one location and they were all healthy and nice size.
