View Full Version : Ducks wasted

I talked to my brother in East Nashville yesterday. He and his wife rode down to the dam at Old Hickory to see the eagles on Cinder Rd. He said there was a pile of dead ducks in the ditch near the boat ramp below the dam.
Now I'm not a big fan of duck myself. But it's not right or ethical to just kill for sport and throw them in a ditch! Prepared right they are edible, and I am sure someone, somewhere would have been proud to have them.
Thoughts?

Hopefully the hunters at least took the breast meat.

Not sure about Tennessee, but in Arkansas, breasting a duck is considered wanton waste. Additionally, not having a wing or head attached to your bag limit is considered unlawful. Silly laws, but they are enforced with a vengeance.

Want to find the ducks? Just find the Federal Game Wardens. They follow the ducks down the flyway.

That's infuriating. Last weekend my dad and I were in Williamsport rabbit hunting and we came across a deer carcass. The neck up was chopped off for someone to have the rack in their living room and the rump roasts were removed, everything else left intact to rot and/or be food for coyotes. That kind of stuff pisses me off and it's what gives hunters a bad rap. Be ethical and use every scrap of edible meat or don't hunt!

There's a huge difference between hunters and killers. Some people just want the thrill of the hunt and have no interest in the meat. I love to hunt and eat duck/deer/turkey and eat as much of em as possible.

Your exactly right....but even if somebody would be in the "killer" category, there are plenty of outlets to donate your kill....and at no cost to the killer!
But yeah, that really bugs me when ya see a pile of carcasses off the beaten path and heads are removed and backstraps....everything else is left un-touched.
Some people have zero respect for the outdoors, the laws, or the people that enforce those laws to ensure an outdoors for them to take advantage of and destroy!
Thats a screwed up circle right there!

No, I did not report to TWRA as I did not witness. But brother said they were whole hen and drake mallards. He estimated 12 or more of them.

Maybe whoever did this is an occasional lurker on here and after reading our comments, he will get a full understanding of how true, law abiding sportsmen feel about his actions.

Good point Sambolie!

I agree with yall this really ticks me off!! not only because ducks are my favorite quarry to hunt but because of the lack of respect people show for the resource, laws and other hunters, maybe it was some stupid teenagers that never been disciplined and over coddled with no regards for anything other their own wishes and feel they can do whatever they feel like, idiots!!

My son hunts deer for sport and food, in the beginning he and I brought the deer to a processor, 140 lb animal goes in and a couple grocery bags of meat is picked up. When he didn't have a family to feed he was ok with it. Fast forward and now he cleans his own. To get as much out of a deer as possible it will take him at least half a day, a bulk of the deer is ground into burger. I've helped him thinking how bad can this be, wow, I got an education, most are not willing to go through the work to get as much as you can. While cleaning a deer I told him when I lived in Wisconsin I remember my dad getting a deer and the delicacy for supper that night was fresh liver. He turned his nose up at it, but this year he had a doe he head shot, I was with him. When he field dressed it I made a kidding remark, "your not having that for supper?" referring to the liver, he got right back at me saying "its liver and HEART for supper at John's house... you going to be there"? Being the mountain man I am I told him with bells on! Our wives and the grand kids ate chicken with the fixings, John and I had the liver and heart as our meat. His first bite was liver and mine was heart. We both inserted into our mouths at the same time, almost in unison we both went mmmm pretty good. Since that deer, when not tore up the heart and liver are the main coarse for supper that night or its put in the freezer. Both are really good deep fried.
