Some might consider this a basic and elementary concept but it seems to me, latelty that its not consistant as it once was.
Guy A buys a new spinning reel and for conversation sake, its a mid range priced well known brand. As an all-around fisherman he chooses a well known brand of 8lb. Mono to spool it up with.
The line is tied to the spool and he is ready to go....now what?
Do you choose label-up or label-down?
If he has one of those spool holders does he have the line come off the too of the spool or the bottom of the spool?

I only bring this up cause i seen a video on facebook from Shakespeare on how to fill a spinning reel, but the guy never got into that detail! Lol.
Back in the day, i know Trilene used to include directions for spinning or baitcasting but i havent seen that in quite a while.
Im sure we have all, at some point took a cast, clicked over the bale only to have 15ft coil off the spool....even with brand new, soft silky line. Is that because the line was put on "backwards"? Is the rolling bearing on the reel causing the problem?

I generally put on a few cranks, open the bale and see if any line " falls" off but thats not always a good indicator and it seems with all the different manufacturers producing different line materials its always different.....so i ask....is thier a "proper" way to spool a spinning rod?

Just something i thought about after watching that video...might be a good topic or i might look like an idiot for fishing for 25+ years and asked the question. Lol

I have tried a lot of line and about all of them in my experienced have some twist no matter which side of the spool they come off of. You can try soaking the line spool in warm lightly soapy water to help release memory but that is only half the line twist battle. After on the reel is another story.

The twist most of the time comes from one of three things after on the spinning reel:

1. Cranking closed the reel after casting not hand closing it. If you crank close the bail and spool do not turn equally.

2. Cranking while the drag is giving line. This is a huge culprit. Always separate the two by letting the fish run then reel or use you had to stop the spool , tighten drag down then reel. Just reeling while a fish is running twists the heck out of it.

3. The lure whether tangled or by design.

Some brands of line are just made with more memory than others by the materials/quality used. Part of the price point of being cheaper but not a rule in every situation or brand. The percent of stretch plays in equation as well. I high stretch line will have more memory (coils as it comes off the spool) than a "0" stretch line.

Most of the time it is label up...but there are times the label...or line...is put on opposite. Travis pretty much covered it. But a good quality reel makes a difference also. I fish spinning reels exclusively. I can't remember when I have had so called wind knots... or line twist. I credit that to quality line....closing the bail with my hand, and never reeling when the fish is pulling drag.

About the same as what Travis and Alpha said.
The rotor turns counter clockwise to take line on the spool. The line should come off the spool in a cc fashion also. I would never use a mechanism that let the line come off in a linear fashion as this will definitely twist it. Almost like reeling against the drag.

If you notice twist in the line: Remove hooks, lures, etc and let line out as you troll. The more line you let off the spool the more twists removed. Crank back in and start fishing (after tying on a lure).

The words in ( ) are for Merv's benefit.

X2 Flurocarbon is something you have to be especially careful with.

All good stuff guys! Funny how so many things can contribute to coiling and other line problems. I keep my fingers damp with decent tension when loading a reel and that seems to work pretty good. I find myself changing line on my spinning reels frequently and the excel from bass pro doesnt give me many problems. But stren i cant get to work for anything and i wont use trilene on my spinning reels.
Ive had to however tie on a sinker open the spoon and troll until im spooled, get some tension on the line then crank it all back in. Maybe thats thanks to buying a new "old" spool of line or old spinning reels. I used to have a HORRIBLE problem with throwing light jig heads....1/16th and lighter in any wind. As i would twitch my bobby garland back under almost no resistance after a few casts i would almost always get the big birds nest tangled in the guides...thats annoying when you know you have to fish the ultra light stuff.
So educate me.....why doesnt braid have this problem? Is it because its multiple strands woven or a softer material or what?

Is that an actual for sale product? Ive never seen anything like that before.
I know doug markham had some good praises for the late doug hannons wave spin reel which is designed to eliminate all line problems from what i understand.

Not on the market yet...and may never be. I read about this several months back. The thing is big.....the gears are open to debris. The concept looks promising but would certainly have to be down sized. The Wave Spin is cheaply made and I don't think you will see it around too long.

That reel even sounded bad! Lol
Ive never been a big "gimmick" kinda fisherman. The rods where you ran the line into the blank and out a hole in the tip is a good example. Those kinds of things, while good ideas on paper, never really seem to pan out of the time. Even during the specific times they should be applied.
Ive caught plenty of fish on the flying lure way back when....using it to fish in marinas to get under all the boats....great concept but that thing would foul up if you didnt lay it on the water perfectly. Funny to think back at all the "latest things" to hit this market that never really make it in the long haul. There have been some good ones! The helicopter lure! Lol

So THAT was my problem huh? I was wondering why I wasn't catching any fish after straightening out my lines! I trolled for hours and hours without a bite.

Thanks SAMBOLIE, YOU'RE MY HERO!

Merv, that happened once on a work related fishing outing.
One of the guys had no fishing knowledge and two more let him fish in their boat. They were catching fish right and left. After a few hours he asked why their rig looked different than theirs. They had only tied a sinker on his line.

Give me a call sometime.

I start winding label up , if it starts to twist while loading I flip spool over for awhile, once all loaded, spray it down with real magic and all the problems go away.

Ive never tried reel magic....i see its endorsed quite a bit and always wondered how well it worked.

Have you ever tried KVD Line and Lure Conditioner? I used Reel Magic for years but switched to KVD Line and Lure Conditioner and it performs much better. The issue with Reel Magic is it is petroleum based and has solvents in it. It will make your line softer and cast better but over time it also weakens it. For years though it was the only line conditioner on the market......and as far as I know KVD and Reel Magic are the only two on the market.

Forgot about Line Butter. I have some of it in my reel lube gear bag...it is pretty oily. Have not seen any of Predator Line Conditioner....have you used it?

I haven't.

I use glide made by Umpqua on my fly lines but haven't really seen enough from it to warrant trying similar stuff on my mono's. Seems like the biggest issues with me not getting casting distance comes from the reels not being at full line capacity more so than limpness. Could be wrong though as I never have tried it. Not totally against trying if it works.

I think one of the reasons I have zero line issues is my use of KVD Line Conditioner. I use a lot of it. I'll check out some of Headricks stuff next time up at Dale Hollow.

I may have to give it a try then. Do you pre soak the night before or apply the day of use?

I apply at night and then also in the morning before fishing. A bottle goes a long way. browntrout uses it all the time also. I know he highly recommends it.

Now this may be a "Far Stretch" for some ... No Pun intended  When I stayed at my cabin and fished the Caney weeks on end ... My spinning gear would really get twisted do to current etc. ... To resolve this problem I would stop at the Center Hill Dam and drop each weighted line over the down side of the dam (250 feet) and let the line untwist and correct the twist and go back to memory of the line ... No problems from then on until after weeks of further fishing created the same problem ...

Not many of you have access to a straight vertical drop but it works ... It may be worth your while if you can find a bridge, Dam etc ... That is legal to be on ... And try this method ... It works ... <'TK>< :)
