Snuck away for a few hours this morning. Havent fished JPP in a few months so i wasnt sure what i was gonna run into. I made up my mind to take nothing but crappie gear as the fall and winter fish still evade me. Started at my summer location and the gills and yellow bass were thick....super thick. Ive never caught so many yellow bass. Lots and lots of surface action as far as the eye could see even as i left about 12:30. Ended up catching about 12 crappies but they were all short. Some cats were mixed in....good eaters about 16-17" but they were released. After the first few hours of intense surface activity around me i gave up on the crappies and threw on a double curly tail rig on one rod and a blade bait and started casting. The white bass were going crazy a huge area about 60-70ft would just boil and explode with whites and some hybrids mixed in. Ya couldnt miss! The big wave would boil up then bust shad/minnows on top for 20-30 seconds then go down and pop back up 50-60 yards away. I chased em down pretty successfully for almost 2 hours. I didnt catch any big whites but they were feisty! Hung a few hybrids that took me for a few rides....didnt land any but sure fun to hear the drag scream! Thier fall run with the whites to the opposite end of the lake has started....i will return with a better selection of baits for the hybrids though.
Didnt end up doing good on crappie but the whites were a great second.
I just cant nail down these fall and winter crappies yet.

That sounds like a blast! I am looking forward to the fall/winter white bass hybrid run. I had a blast last year catching them. The only fall crappie I have ever had any luck with is under the lights. I would like to get out to priest and try some but don't see that happening with the part time job starting up.

Sounds like you had a great day out there! How far up lake have they made it? I was just wondering if anyone had seen them in the jumps recently. I didn't really see much of them this summer.

Yeah juice it was a fun fast paced few hours.
It was this time last year when my crappies vanished and the whites/hybrids moved in. I know the whites and hybrids make thier winter home not far from where i got into them today. In regards to the crappies, where i fish is a good mix of wood and rock in 12-18ft and they just werent there so im not sure what i need to do next. Just time on the water i suppose! If they tend to suspend over open water for the next few months they can be a challenge to locate.
FloatnFish, i launched out of Couchville and found the whites between the ramp there and bryant grove. so i guess that would make it mid-lake if ya consider the bridge the half way point.
