To the fishingTN family.... thinking about heading to Carthage Thursday to catch a line side or 12 that are larger than what I've gotten into on JPP. I've fished out there 3 times and always put in at rome tn and caught bait there in the creek. Do any of you with more experience (pssst.... TK, AERO, MERV... scratch that last one...) know of a spot closer to the Caney where shad are plentiful? It is a long boat ride from rome to the caney. There are several good spots to fish on the way but I like that cooler water up closer to the dam.

I know I'm asking for valuable info so thanks in advance for any help!

JK, waaaaaaay out of my experience territory. Doubt if I've been to the Carthage area twice in my life, and none gathering bait. I'd suggest throwing a castnet right on top of a big school of shad to get the best results!!

I don't have a current bait location report, but up by the Cordell Hull dam is great for shad and skipjack. Castnet for shad and little jigs for the skippies. You may have to hunt for them, but at this time of year there are usually bunches of shad around the dams.

Also, as you head up the Caney it gets clearer and you can see the schools of big gizzard shad feeding on the bottom. Cast net them.

You definitely want bigger baits for stripers. I don't think you can catch a gizzard shad too big, but the 7 - 10 inch ones are great baits and usually pretty easy to net.

Good luck,
Jim

Just put in at Carthage ( I know it is 20 miles up steam via the waterway from Rome but less road mileage) ..catch bait and fish the area at Carthage ... Put in at Carthage ... Fish between the dam and the bridge both ways ... You will be a happy camper ... <'TK>< :)

Now this time of year ... Concentrate on the islands below Carthage ...
