This is why you don't let SAMBOLIE know where you are going fishing, no jinx, no slump.

And this is what a nice sized rockfish can do to your hook.

Merv, Are you sure it was a rock and not a tree stump that you snagged?

Ott, we were fishing 20 ft deep in 120 FOW. The tree tops were only coming up to about 50 ft plus I had the fish on for about a minute until he did that to the hook.
And these are not light wire hooks, these are 1/2 oz jigs w saltwater SS hooks. I tried to twist the hook back and couldn't budge it.
Face the facts, it was a badass rockfish!.

Merv, I wish you could have gotten the fish close enough to see it. Maybe not, because it would add to the disappointment if you saw how large it was.
Glad you got a good one anyway.
What test line did you have?

That was on 20lb test braid.
And as far as seeing the fish, we had about 165 ft of line out, more or less. I would get some line in and the fish would take it all back. Like I said, probably fought it for about one minute. Have no clue how big or even what it was, just know that where we were when it hit, we had been catching stripers.
We were catching our hybrids about 800 yds away from where the stripers were hitting. And these are the same jigs we had out on all of our other lines, 8 lines out.
We had two other fish break us off after bringing in fish and not resetting the drag on the reels. I think we lost a total of 6 fish due to various reasons and we boated 12.
It was a fun trip. We had fish from 2 lbs up to the biggest 13 lbs. Rocks and hybrids. The last fish of the day came at 8:30 PM, an 18 inch smallie. All the fish we caught swam away.
