Had the week off this week so I was able to put a good bit of time in the seat of my kayak. Wednesday morning I got up early and headed toward the Elk River. I had never been there before so my plan was to put in the dam for a bit and then put in at Ferris Creek Bridge and paddle upstream and fish my way back. I ended up putting in at Ferris Creek first and never did make it to the dam. I paddled upstream to what looked to be about halfway to the dam on the map. Once I finally started fishing, I was catching fish immediately. They hit about anything I threw at them but I caught most on spinners and TM's. I lost count but probably caught 30-40 trout in 4 hours of fishing. I didn't catch anything huge but did find a large Brown dead. The Elk was really nice. It's just a different kind of river than the Caney. I would definitely make the drive again.

On Thursday, the wife and I packed up to go camping below Center Hill and fish the Caney. After we got all settled in, we launched the kayaks in the pond to fish for a couple hours. There was one generator running and the fish were biting pretty well. While the wife got accustomed to her kayak, I sat in one spot and caught 15-20 trout in about an hour. Most were small but did get lucky with one nice Brown.

The next morning we made the rainy float from the dam to Happy Hollow. Fish were biting just about anything. We caught 50-60 trout between the two of us. I caught most on spinners and TM's. Wife was using corn for the most part. Nothing huge but the wife managed the biggest fish of the day with an 18" rainbow. Overall, it was a great trip and a good experience for the wife just getting used to fishing from the yak. It was so nice being on the Caney and not having to battle the crowds. We saw a half dozen or so fishermen wading and that was it. Sorry for the long read.

Sounds like a blast. Did you warn the wife about who is to catch the biggest fish?

Nice trips thanks for posting them. I bet that brown died of old age.

Was the water really 47 in the Elk?

Ya it really was. When I turned around and started heading back, the water temp read 46.7 on my depth finder. It was around 51 at Ferris Creek Bridge.

Ha! I tried but she didn't listen. She did great though. She landed that Rainbow on 2lb mono.

Water has always been colder in the Elk than the Caney. One of the reasons you don't want to go over the side in the Elk. I remember wading it a couple of times in the summer and had to get out to warm up...LOL.

Really pretty fish. Can you get a larger boat in at the dam? It's been years since I fished it and my grandfather wants to catch trout.

That sucks to see a huge brown like that dead, I hope it was old age and not somebody carelessly handling it. You and her both got a really nice trout! I miss the Caney Fork and have been anxious to get back out there in my kayak. Good stuff man, glad you both had a good time!

I went today and caught 5 decent browns. Lost a monster at the boat. My wife was trying to net it and she batted it away. After that I netted all the fish.
We caught around 35. I'll post photos tomorrow.

That rainbow was gorgeous.
