looks like a sauger or walleye.
I was thinking walleye. I thought sauger had big black spots and was more round.

Most do but I have seen pictures of sauger without the spots. I am not a walleye or sauger expert by any means.

Sauger. A walleye has a relatively clear dorsal fin with no spots. Sauger has the spotted dorsal like in the pic.

That fish typifies a "saugeye", a hybrid of sauger and walleye mix. Has the indicators of both fish, the spots on the dorsal fins and the relative coloration of a walleye.
I side photo of the fish would help.

Compare to this:

Definitely not a walleye.
If dorsal was spotted its a sauger. If it was streaked its a saugeye.

While I can't make a judgement without seeing a side shot I could however put a tape on it and if I did not know if it was walleye or sauger I would know the minimum length legal for both, and if that joker met those requirements it would be going home to the skillet....LOL.

I second not a walleye, they also have a white spot at the base of the second dorsal and on the tip of the tail. I vote a sauger or saugeye.
