I'm on vacation all this week so I figured I would load up the kayak and check out the Elk River. I've never been there before so I was just curious how far from the dam each of the access points are. Just looking at the map, it looks like I'll probably use Ferris Creek Bridge Access or Old Dam Ford. If anyone has any input on these two I would appreciate it. Also, how tough would it be to paddle upriver? I'll probably be going solo so I won't have anyone to pickup and drop off with. I know it's pretty easy on the Caney with no gens but wasn't sure about the elk.
Thanks in advance

We floated it yesterday from Farris Bridge to Old Dam Ford.
See this interactive map from TWRA for details on the take out locations and also shows river miles for distances.

Tim's Ford Dam is sluicing 240cfs continuous right now so there is a steady current on the river. Some places you could paddle up easily, some places would be a real workout to get back up.
If you wanted to do it, I would paddle up from Old Dam Ford and float back. There is a good mile of fairly placid water from there. Right down from Farris, there are a few successive riffles you would have to paddle back up.
Not sure about paddling up from Farris toward the dam, have not done that stretch. The upside to Farris is that there are takeouts on both sides of the river, and they are much nicer/easier than Old Dam Ford.
Here's a link to photos from our trip two weeks ago. We got rained on pretty bad during the second half.
