Hybrid Video with Merv on Sunday

Merv and I hit the water before daylight on Sunday morning to catch shad then headed down the lake for a little hybrid action. Got the GoPro out (finally got the replacement unti) and made a video of Merv in action.

No, if you use the waterproof housing, the sound is not very loud. I am using the GoPro Hero3+ Black model with the LCD screen and a case that allows you to use the touch screen on the LCD and plug in a microphone on the side. The built-in microphone was used for the video.

The video was edited with iMovie on an iPad. You can adjust the volume of the video clip if necessary. I used the default sound settings.

I would use the waterproof case for the kayak and a Zoom H1 with lapel microphone to record the sound, then add the sound to the video when the editing takes place. When you start shooting, clap your hands and that will provide a point to sync the audio with the video. The clap will show up in the GoPro audio track. Once you get them synced, turn off the audio track from GoPro.

I would give the waterproof case a try by itself first because you may be close enough for it to work. If it does not work, you can always add background music to the video.

The reels on the Ugly Sticks are Okuma Convectors (20 series). They are line counters and are spooled with 20 lb. Power Pro line with 20 lb. fluorocarbon leaders.

Thanks I was wondering because the sound was muffled, maybe it was just the work computer. I don't use the waterproof housing on the kayak either, they seem to fog up, and audio is horrible. I just risk it. I have over 70G of video from Gulf Trips catching Spade Fish, Kings, Mahi Mahi and many other pelagic fish to Stripers, and Browns on the Holston. I just haven't found the time to do any editing and when I do I'm just not happy with it. I really don't like the Go Pro video editing software.

I gotta hand it to Bob, he knows how and WHERE to catch those stripers and hybrids. He has got the ultimate setup for this type of fishing, one kickass boat and enough gear to make you want to cry because you don't have it...plus he is a tireless individual when it comes to throwing that cast net.

His favorite saying is " I would love to catch one shad per throw of the net every time". And after watching him throw that thing for 90 minutes and averaging one throw per minute, I can see why he says that.

He wanted 36 shad for the morning's trip and it took about 90 minutes to get them. And he can throw a circle every time! I would be throwing "tacos" every other cast.

After netting our 36 shad (and bluegills and crappies and catfish and white bass) we headed out of Stewart's Creek and drove downlake to start fishing. We hadn't fished for 10 minutes when we caught our first fish, a two pound striper. Ten minutes later it was a four pound hybrid. I tried to get Bob (aero) to reel in a fish, but he pulled the Captain Bligh trump card and said as the new swabbie on board, it was my job to do all of the dirty work!

He did finally pick up one rod when I was reeling in another 6 pound hybrid, only because I was occupied and he didn't want to chance having the fish break his line and cost him a sinker and hook. You can see these fish in the video, mine was the biggest (of course) weighing in at 6 pounds even while his was a mere 5 lbs 15 oz. (Guess who was reading the Boga?)

We caught a total of 5 hybrids Cherokee bass for those who aren't familiar with the lingo, (jad2t, mnfisher), couple of undersized largemouth bass, one very nice crappie, and a catfish (Bob's specialties, catfish and carp). Bob was pretty well into a funk because he didn't catch a carp, but I cheered him on when he caught the catfish, telling him it ranked right there in popularity with the carp. That lifted his spirits tremendously, but I know he was secretly hoping for another big carp to mount for his den.

For this little foray, he says I owe him a crappie trip. So I wheedled and hemmed and hawed and said IF he'd take me on a guided trip to Tim's Ford with his Great Lakes setup and fish for stripers there, then I figured those two trips would even out to a guided crappie trip on JPP.....and I'll even throw in an autographed picture of me. Snicker....he went for it!

Editing with iMovie is a breeze. Did you use any sonar in your search for fish or did you just troll in an area you knew they would be at?

Lmao!!!!! Im all too familiar with the taco! And the banana, and the flying mass of knotted mono net, the wrist snapper, knuckle buster, ect.
Before this year i wizzed away many many HOURS of prime striper time in the early morning from bad net throws in shad polluted creeks on Melton Hill. See a school.....make a crap throw, get ticked, throw again, even worse....lol. Oh how stupid i was...."just a net....how hard can it be to throw?" Lmao...

Fish were showing up on the depthfinder, but the place has held fish for a couple of weeks.

Merv got a good taste of what catching shad on a lake is really like. You can go to the steam plant or below the dams and catch shad easily, but in the lake it is a much bigger job. I would gladly pay for shad if they were available to purchase!

Start with a five foot net (opens to 10 feet) and practice in the yard. You have to get the net turning and centrifugal force causes the net to open. Also, take an extra net in case you get hung up. Last year I learned how to replace the Braille lines ( draw strings). Buy Betts nets. Cheap nets are not a bargain I.e, Wally World.

Bob need some more betts nets I have two only used the 10' twice and the 12' is still new both for $200.00 the 10' is a bait net and the 12' is a deep water net.............woody P.S. the 10' opens to 20' and the 12' to 24'
