I met up with Scott Fujimara at Williamsport. Got in the water at 5am and started throwing the SUMKINA popping toad. I've been dying to get my first frog bass since this is a technique I recently started trying to learn. Finally some success...sort of. I had five big blowups and missed all five of them on the hookset

I did still manage 6 bass in the yak in about 5 hours of fishing. 2 on chatterbaits, those are really becoming a confidence lure for me. 3 on crankbaits, and one on a SUMKINA stick worm.

No monsters but all quality 2-3 pound fish except two dinks. Planning to head back Saturday morning to do it all over again. My two biggest would give me 34" so in a tournament I may have done fairly well.

Sounds good. As of now, my plans are to be in the water shortly after 5am. I get up at 3 so I'll be out of the water about the same time you will. I was done about 10am last time.

Get that GoPro ready!

Very nice fish Jimmy. The frog fishing is fun but can drive you NUTS! Sometimes it's hard to understand how a fish can miss the frog when it is just sitting there. I wish I would have got the fish last night on video that just kept knocking the frog into the air, I bet he did it 5 times and every time it was about 15" into the air.

Well the first two times were my fault for pulling the trigger too early. I was too excited to finally be getting blowups on the frog. Half the battle is getting them to go after it. Now I just need to finish the job!

Yeah it takes some time to get used to fishing it. After you do it long enough you kind of learn when to set the hook. The first fish I caught last night took two cast and and he missed it 3 times before finally getting it. the second fish inhaled it and I immediately set the hook because I "just knew". Just remember like most soft plastics, the fish will hold onto it for a few seconds, usually long enough for you to tell he has it. Are you fishing a hollow body frog?

No it's not hollow. It's solid rubber. The guy who makes them says that feeling makes the fish hold onto the frog longer than it would for a hollow body because they feel it get squashed down and that's what causes a lot of missed hooksets with those. He catches a lot of fish with them and the guys in South Florida are killing it on these frogs as well. He's going to send me some more that are worked more like a buzzbait and I should have better hookup ratio. Any ratio is better that what I had Friday haha.

Honestly, I think for some of those blowups the bass missed the frog but I got too excited and set the hook just because I didn't see the frog. The first two, I reacted way too soon. The last three, I know you're supposed to "wait until you feel the fish" but I couldn't haha. I saw the blowup, saw the frog disappear, waited a second or two and let it rip... and the frog came flying out of the water. Patience Daniel-son, patience.

The frog, not being hollow, is heavy and will sink if not worked correctly in a walking or popping motion (I have floating toads that are to be walked and popping toads) so the blowup probably caused the frog to sink and that made me set the hook. I need to stay calm until I actually feel the fish. Had I done that, I may have been able to let the frog float back up, give it a couple pops and trigger another strike.
